High praise indeed!
It sure was nice to be warm and dry through rain and light snow on Millenium Falcon's Jeep camping trip last weekend! The new 1/2 cab worked great. I am very glad I made the windows so they could open. The windshield was fogging up and I just peeled the velcro back on the window corners to let fresh air in. The last time I paid much attention to Grasshopper was last November when I made the 1/2 cab to go on Seth's ride in Pennsylvania. I have discovered that I like working in a cold drafty barn on a dirt floor less and less as time goes on. The Spring Willys Reunion is less than 10 weeks away now, so it's time to hitch up my britches and get to wrenchin.
I had put Jeff's x98 low transfer case gears in for the Ohio Fall Colors Ride in October and they worked great. I was concerned about a clicking noise when in low range though and swapped the original transfer case back in for Seth's ride. I sure didn't want to chance messing up Jeff's new gears! Well today I finally got around to tearing into it and think I've got the low range clicking noise solved. Sure did break my heart to rip it open again. Getting quicker at it all the time though! The problem was that 1 or 2 teeth on the slide gear are not quite right. I bought a used set of gears and to the eye they look perfect. Every time the slide gear (on the left) is engaged with the intermediate gear there is a loud click at just one spot where the black line is. It was very noticeable even when just turning it by hand. Luckily I had an extra slide gear (on the right) and just finished swapping it in. No more click!! Here is a photo of the used gear I bought and the one I had on hand which I know is original. I am wondering if the gear I bought is an Omix which would explain a lot. The original one (bottom) is stamped 18-8-17 plus another stamped number I am guessing might be a date code. The purchased one (top) also has the part number stamped but has other numbers that are cast. Anyway, it doesn't much matter at this point - I'm just happy to have solved the riddle of the click. I have to order some more new gaskets now and find a decent transfer case pan. If anyone has a spare pan for a D-18 - let me know. Now I'm anxious to get this t-case back together so I can swap it back into Grasshopper. I think I'll time myself - maybe I can qualify to join a Willys pit crew! -Barry |

Got the transfer case with Jeff's gears all put back together Saturday - ready to swap back into Grasshopper. Output shaft endplay ended up being .006".
I decided to leave the interlock pill out. It might be nice at times to have 2 wheel drive in low range. I'll just have to be careful not to over torque the rear drive train. Also, it would have been nice to be able to disconnect the front yoke when I was trying to diagnose the source of the low range click. I went ahead and reused the pan that I had repaired. Checked clearances - all good. Hoping to do the swap this weekend if the weather cooperates.

Started another project that has been on the list for Grasshopper. His carb is missing some linkage parts and I have noticed a big drop in power when I push the skinny pedal down past a certain point. I went out to the parts jeep fleet and pulled 3 Carter WOs. I just sent one of them to Scout Pilot for a restore. Once I get that one back I'll swap it onto Grasshopper and then try rebuilding the others to have on hand as spares. Looks like fun to do. Probably should have done that during cold weather when I couldn't work in the barn.

How much do they charge for a carb rebuild? I have one that needs it, but I keep putting off. I have the kit but haven't had the best luck with rebuilding carbs...
Not sure if I want to tackle it myself or to send it out.

It's been quite a while since I've posted
anything - I've been super busy but have a bunch of Jeep progress to
share. I'll get to it as soon as I can but recently I've taken an
interest in trying to learn how to edit videos so I can share those too.
Here is my first serious attempt at editing video clips taken with
my GoPro. It took me 2 weeks of trial and error using the GoPro Quik app
and then the video editor included in Windows 10. Hopefully my learning
curve is going upward!
I had a great time at Bantam Festival running trails and hanging
out with flatfender friends. The only thing is that they require 35"
or larger tires to let you do the really fun stuff. I was thrilled that
the guys staffing the large rock pile let me take it on! Thanks Pug and
Doug! As it turns out Grasshopper tippytoed thru easily. Never even
touched my new skid plates!

That was awesome!!
The only thing that would make it better, with your great editing skills add footage of a mall crawler with 37s getting hung up and unable to complete what you just did

So I had an opportunity to revisit Southington Off Road Park on Sunday. Tom (TJo) met me there and we spent the afternoon doing the harder stuff and testing out his newly installed front locker. It gave me the chance to do a couple of things I missed when we were there before the Spring Willys Reunion. Especially Havoc Hill. I also climbed the big rock by the shooting containers again - it was less scary this time. I have been doing every thing in low range (jpet's gears) and 1st gear. Next time I'll be trying some of the rocks and climbs in low range 2nd gear. Tire pressure was 9 psi which made a noticeable improvement on climbs as well as a more comfortable ride.
