I didn't even notice the shift lever beween the seats until I got it home!  I know it's not a rear PTO - the gas tank is under the floor in the back and would be in the way.  So what is this?  Overdrive?  Why would you need overdrive with 3.73 gears?  Possibly with 4.27s?

Thank you!  That makes sense.  There is fair lead on the front where a winch used to be.

Single-stick transfer case, or is a stick missing?

Single stick.  I'll have to convert it to 2 stick when it goes into the build jeep.

Sure enough there's a drive spline on the front of the PTO housing.  Couldn't see it in the dark and rain last night.  Going to get it off the trailer and check the diff gear ratio next.

Thanks Mike! I really appreciate the encouragement.

Did the "turn just one wheel 10 times and count the drive shaft turns" trick today.  18.6 turns x 2 = 37.2.  Move the decimal point one place to the left =3.72.  I've got the standard 3.73:1 ring & pinion gears.

I was hoping for the 4.27s but thats OK.  At some point I'll add lockers and will change gearing then.  On a happy note I discovered that all the drive train parts turn free and smooth including the engine.
The next step on this donor jeep will be to get it running to look for any glaring problems before stripping it down.

That will have to wait though, as I found out today that a bunch of folks from this forum will likely be headed to Southington Off Road Park to wheel on June 6.  That is real close to me here in northeast Ohio and I am determined to attend.  I have to turn my attention to Grasshopper which has pretty much no brakes.  Some of the guys on here have built an entire jeep in 2 weeks, so I am hoping to be able to to either do a disk brake conversion or at least stock brake repairs in that amount of time!

I see you used the high-tech rotation count pointer for finding your R&P ratio.  Originals like that are hard to find.  Big smile

Yep, took 4 hours of searching in the woods to find one the exact length required! Luckily I didn't have any trouble finding a beautiful assistant to spin the wheel.  My wife was happy to help!

Nothing like a deadline to make you get your butt in gear!  I am planning to take Grasshopper to Southington where I am excited to meet a bunch of folks from the CJ2A Page in person.  Started by clearing out a place in the barn to work.  Only took 8 hours on Memorial day.

Main project is to do a Tracker disk brake conversion on all 4 wheels.  l wanted to check the brake fluid first before starting in.  Project mushroomed right away - could not get any tool on the square on the MC cover thru the floor access hole.  Had to take the fender off to get to it and even then just barely broke it loose.  Here's my solution.

Next surprise was when I pulled the Sears lockout hubs.  2 different outer axles.  1 has a snap ring and the other has a threaded end with a nut and cotter pin.  Hopefully that will be OK for now.  Also both spindles were damaged at some point from seized bearings.  Luckily those cleaned up good with emery cloth.

Next surprise - PO had filled the knuckles with regular gear oil - luckily I had a pan handy.  After I got it all drained out and buttoned up I did some research and decided to use Corn Head grease.  1 tube per knuckle.  I swapped out all the king pin studs and nuts with #8 bolts because the ones on top would interfere with the brake hose.  The rest of the disk brake conversion went as expected with a couple of changes.  After test fitting everything I like to tack the spacers to the bracket plate - easier assembly and less parts to loose. Also I realized that the old rear backing plates had drain holes that lined up with the bottom of the grease protector cup.  The new mounting plate would block that so I drilled holes to match - otherwise water would accumulate in the grease protector cup.  I'm surprised that no one had mentioned that (At least in all my searches).

Another small change to the disk brake conversion was that the brake hoses that were suggested did not match the anti swivel stops on the Tracker calipers.  I was worried that they would swivel and loosen the banjo bolts - most likely on the fronts as you steered.  My solution was to just fill the gap by mooshing in some epoxy putty.  We'll see if it holds.  You have to look close as the epoxy putty is gray.  Please forgive the weird hard line on the front and the tie wraps on the rear.  Southington is approaching FAST!

Its coming together but Southington is in 4 days.  That would be plenty of time except that I'm up to my ears in service calls that backed up during the Covid shut down.  One thing that is definitely not going to happen is I wanted to get/make a bikini top - hope it doesn't rain!  I had to borrow tires and rims from my brother's CJ3A for this weekend.  They're 15" rims so I had to add 1" spacers to clear the calipers.  I kind of like the slightly wider stance.  The red rims are growing on me too with the green jeep - Christmas colors!  Also, it doesn't sit that high - it's still on the jack stands.

Looking good! I’m doing the same brake conversion on my CJ5 project. I like the spacer tack idea!

I thought I replied to this thread earlier,  but obviously not.   My '2A has 3.73's and Dauntless (and SM420) . .  I wish I could "click fingers" and try out out 4.10-4.27,  but I am not unhappy with 3.73
We can take a ride this weekend,  and see what you think.

You might want to use those BuckShots if it is going to be wet in Southington.  :-)
