New member here, Got my Jeep home Last Friday and did not like the steering. Found out a PO has destroyed the bracket that is welded to the crossmember. It is beyond repair and needs to be replaced. Can anyone help with locating one?

What year and size of bracket are you looking for? I may have one from an early 46. I’ll check the shop if this might help. I’m located between Hot Springs and Malvern.

That should be an early 3/4" style, both what you have and what is pictured.

I just measured it. It's a 3/4 inch size. The type that has the wedge pin holding the shaft.

Now would be the perfect time to "supersize" your steering by getting the 48 and later bracket (7/8") and later model bell crank kit and bell crank.
If you have ever had the lock pin and pivot come out on the early model you know what a real thrill it is running along at 40 mph and have no steering. I went through a ditch and hit a barbed wire fence. I had to replace about 50 foot of barbed wire fence and I still considered myself lucky. Ol' Red could have easily rolled when she hit the ditch... |

I like that idea. Do the bellcranks on both sizes face down?

The ball on the late ‘48 and newer bellcrank with the 7/8” pin points up. You will also need to change the drag link.

The year of my Jeep is 1948 CJ2A. The size does not matter. If yours is a weld-on type 3/4 it will fit right in. If its 7/8 It will fit and I'll replace the bell crank and rod to make it work. Your close enough I'll come and get it. - Ed

Welcome to the page, EdNormandy! The newer 7/8" bell cranks are easier to come by and cost a lot less than the older 3/4" ones, but you do have to get the newer drag link too.

Ednormandy sorry, I’ve been away from my computer, I checked the bell crank bracket that I have, it has been cut in such a manner that it can no longer be used. I should have double checked before I said anything. My apologies.

Ed,
If no one has a spare, I found this: And of course there's Harry Sheets who should be able to cut one out for you:
