Ah, that reminds me - another good reason to bring the Mack - the CJ2-A doesn't have a skid plate. BW

Probably want option 3 Hawky. Otherwise, you most likely will get some "Jeeping evidence".
The very last shot that Muley posted is the rock slide. My Jeep is on the "road" in all shots. A couple show the creek bed. They (the quazy 8's) would drive the creek. I may depending on before and after straglers, take "The Quazy's" over for play time. I'll either ride or watch, no way I'm going in there in my Jeep. Working on day 4 on Friday with Rick R. We'll be near Lost Leakerland. I'll keep you all posted with Muley's help on the next two days worth. I'll be missing you all, but thinking of you as we do Jeep Trail Research. Oilly

Good golly Hawk just when I thought that you didn't have another project! Another hidden jewel - you sure make it tough to keep up with. I'm with Oilly on this one - take the beater Jeep. As far as the title I would just transfer one of your other plates just as a temporary thing - anyway who's going to mess with you up in dem hills!

Tumble,
I've been sitting on this 2A for a while. I have a pretty long honey do list before I can really tear into that one. Hawk |

Day 4 Recon is now complete. We found another good one thanks to Rick R from Belle Fourche. We will leave Spearfish and climb to the old mining town site of Carbonate. The very old graveyard is still there and marked. Mining shafts that will give you shivers looking down, old loading timbers for the ore, and a maze of trails. Another Rock challenge for Jpet and Stan is waiting for you two! Stan will love the History. Ironic how a modern day gold mine sits right next to the old one. Gold is where you find it, and find it they did. From there we will have lunch at the plywood mansion. An old two story cabin of sorts. Then we hit a wopper of a trail which takes us briefly along a powerline and then down a rough but very beautiful trail that follows Squaw Creek. Near there is Devil's Bathtub and the Cleopatra gold mine. The mine is on private property so we won't go there, and the bathtubs are where hot summer hikers cool off in Squaw Creek. The trail is absolutley awesome. Spearfish Canyon is also beautiful, especially from a Jeep high up on it's rim. Be ready to buck fallen pines and get some of that good smell on your hands. We'll have saws along. The trails on top are so frequent, it's easy to get lost. Heck even we had to look at the map. You will love it. BE SURE!!!!!!!!!! YOUR BRAKES ARE TIP TOP, AND YOUR ENGINE IDLES GOOD AND DOESN'T QUIT CLIMBING A STEEP HILL. We will have each wait until the Jeep in front tops the hill. Also remember the width of 62 inches or less, permits, and your Jeep configuration of no side stuff. "Slicks" No gunships! Oilly

Sounds better all the time! I really appreciate you taking time away from your normal routine to do this for us.
But don't despair, Oilly, if you can't find enough trails to fill every day. A tamer trail would fit in nicely here & there, and some might enjoy that more than others (I'm fine with the way your headed). Heck, I even enjoyed the trip to the cave last year (except for Lee's attempt to get us throwed out or in jail !) The Rushmore trip was good too, but neither of those would be something I'd want to do every year. You're doing great, keep up the good work, whatever you plan will be fine with me! BW

I have a book on Ghost Towns of the Black Hills which describes Carbonate and the Cleopatra. I plan on writing down the interesting points and giving you all a history lesson while on site. Sort of like a Jeep tour bus driver. Hard to believe it when you see what's left. Time dissolves what man has done , but rock seems to hold on where man has dug , mined or disturbed things. Greed and money will literally move mountains. We did find a old Hippey bus up there. It had chicken wire over the window openings. It wasn't for riot control. Probably chickens. No Trump/Pence signs either.
Rick! (space G) , you should come. You only live once. Like the bumper sticker says: "Work Sucks " I'm ging Jeeping! I think Bruce has those on his seat backs in the 3B maybe. I remember laughing anyway. Muley, shed the pipes! Machine gun also. Trench Brooms are good though. Only 7 months to get ready folks. |

I wish I could make it. I should probably wash the Jeep, It's been over a year. But I did change the oil in it recently.
A friend was working in South America and at sometimes he had to ride the bus. People, chickens and goats. The dreaded chicken bus. Edited by Unkamonkey - 13 Nov. 2016 at 12:43pm |

HA-HA the "Cave Nazi" tour guide took her job WAAAY to seriously!! The caretaker had a group of us off to the side telling us that George Armstrong Custer led the 7th Cav thru the area and directly across the front of the cave entrance without noticing it on his way to the LBH. Smelling BS I Informed Oilly who in turn gave the caretaker some schooling-given the departure and destination the story was impossible. The caretakers response? " That's what the (gov entity that owns the property) told us to tell the public".

Even if the borders are closed to flat fenders (what went on after I left?!) these trails will be worth the trip. You guys confuse and amuse me.
