Here is a series of photos of my Spen trailer. I picked it up a few years ago for $300. You can see from the photos that the monkeys got to it just a bit, altering the hitch. When I restore this trailer, that's one of the things I'll take care of. This trailer has the square axle and 5 lug rims. The lugs are bolts rather than nuts. The tailgate looks like a different setup than jpets. I have photos of other spen trailers that look just like my tailgate setup, although the supports on mine look like the same monkeys were at it.
It has both of the original hubcaps. Overall, it's in pretty good shape. The fenders need a bit of attention at the bottom, the hitch needs put back to original and the tailgate supports need help. I'll need to bring her out of the barn and into the garage this winter and get to work. I'd love to bring it down to Mason. |

Hi Bob,
Nice trailer! Let me guess .... no tags right. Any rivet holes? In your photo album, you state that your trailer is a '46: http://www.flickr.com/photos/18648234@N00/382965985/ I assume you have the title? What's the serial number? |

Hmmm. Wonder what the timeline is on these things in regards to the changes in the back end. The title of mine says that it is a '47 SJ165 |

I went with 46 because someone told me that. I would like to know the timeline too. For some reason they changed the whole tailgate. When I re-do mine, that will be the problem area. I can see myself remaking a whole bunch of that. I have not found a tag not rivet holes as of yet. When I do mine, I'll take it down layer by layer to see if I can find the original color. If I can'd find anything, it may get a color close to my 3b.

I have read that they were either green or blue. I would be very curious to see if your tailgate has a logo like mine under the paint.

I put some fine sandpaper to it yesterday evening. Someone had painted it Olive drab most recently. What I found on the side was the olive, black, dark (forest) green, primer, metal. I'll try another spot on the other side this evening if I'm out in the barn. What did you use to strip your paint? I want to be vary carful on the tailgate so I can see if there's a logo.
Also, my trailer seems to be of the same vintage as the yellow one above. Same tailgate setup and all. As you can see on the detail of mine, someone added a bent piece of angle to add strength to the sides. I'l need to change that back to original. Also, the bottom most fender mounts have been monkeyed with. Looks like they might have been broken and someone made their own brackets above where the originals were. I'll fix that too. I looked all over it and still have not found any place for a tag, nor did I find anything that looks like original tail light mounts. Both sides have a slightly different tail light configuration. The springs seem to be straight from the CJ2A production line. |

I'm not sure what the brand the paint remover was. Just something from a farm and home store. brush it on let it sit for a little bit, then use a scraper. I'd practice in a non critical area. On my tailgate, I didn't use any. I dropped the trailer off at the sandblaster, came back in a couple hours, and low and behold, there was the logo. The guy who sandblasted the trailer discovered it.

Joey, I did a little light sanding on the tailgate and found the same color scheme. I did find a few leaves painted in white under the black layer but on top of the forest green. I did not find any sign of a logo on the tailgate.

Bob and Jeff,
I don´t know if you have seen this ad. The Swedish text in the upper right corner says:
"Jeep catalog, 1953. The manufacturer is SPEN and the trailers comes in three versions.
S-model standard trailer price 1953 USD 250.00
H-model with stakes price 1953 USD 277.00
V-model closed trailer with backdoor price 1953 USD 375.00
Interesting in the specifications for Model-S, Tail Light and License Bracket!
You could also see the taillight and bracket on the Model-H
If you are interested in a large version of this ad for closeup details, I could mail it to you.
Enjoy
Roger

Rober B, that would be great, even by e-mail. I have some versions of this ad, but I think fairly small. rchristy@kent.edu

Roger,
I'd like to get a copy. especially a clearer version of the "H" model. I wonder if that is a Willys brochure or a Spen brochure. Notice that "taillight" is singular. |

Bob and Jeff,
Larger scan of the SPEN ad emailed to you. It´s a BMP file 3,43 MB.
The scan is from the WILLYS Jeepklubb of Swedens club newspaper from 1993.
I think this ad is from a WILLYS brochure, since the club has access to the Swedish
importer Scania-Vabis archives.
