I just bought a 1947 cj2a and it came with a buick v6 motor.  I am having a hard time figuring out if it is the 225 or the 231.  cant find any of the block numbers. Any help or suggestions would be great.  thanks for the help.

Oh ok. What is the main thing that stands out to be able to tell that it's a 225?

One thing is that the 225 used a points type distributor.  There was also another buick V6 that was smaller than the 225 and  I think it was a 198 and the oil filter angled out towards the front on it and had to be caped off and a remote filter used.

The valve covers. The 225 has valve covers that are level between the two. The tops of 231 valve covers are angled. The 231 had point distributors too. Search the ecj5 site. Tons of info there.

All I was going on was that a HEI dist wouldn't fit in my 225 Buick motor.

No a 231 hei fits a 225. All you have to do is grind the intake bolt that's right by the distributor cap. I have one on my 225.

Thanks,  Its been over 30 years since I tried installing one and cant remember why it wouldn't go in, but my son has the jeep now and was wanting to put one in it.  What dist are you using and would a button head bolt work instead of grinding the hex head?

I got one from Summit for a 231 odd fire. You need to know if it is an even or odd fire before ordering. I think an allen head bolt would work too. It is real tight. I also ground the mounting flange down where the bolt goes to make it fit a bit better. Also, a 231 4bbl intake fits too.

I had the same issue on a 47 that i bought with a v6.  I did find the block code. Mine was below the head on the left side on the front of the block. Had to scratch some old paint off but it was there. The only thing you need is the first 2 characters of the number. Turned out mine was a 1962 (first year of buick v6) whick is a 198 ci.

I put the engine out of a '68 Riviera GS and put it into a 65 GMC pickup once and had to build the clutch linkage from scratch to retain the truck transmission.  It took a couple of tries to get it where I liked the way it worked, but as far as I know it's still in the truck with that Buick engine.
