Yes, that's my question, I should have been more specific, thanks for clarifying that.

Commandos are the same width as the CJs of the same year.

But Wait a minute.
The Commando frame rails are wider and so the spring perches will not fit onto the CJ leaf springs.
Besides that Commando gear ratio will likely be way off for your needs.

If you want a Dana 30, then plan on changing out the gears regardless of axles original application.
The 1972-1975 D30's are typically the best for flatty conversions due to carrier casting preference
1976-1981 Jeep narrow tracks can also be easily fitted.

I have a totally different question. It is about the light green jeep with the 32 inch tires on it. Is there a build thread on this jeep?  I really like the way it looks.

I don't know of a build thread, It belongs to Ron Dennis "willytj" From my memory:

Motor: 4cyl Iron Duke
Trans: T18
TC: D20
Rear: D44 (ARB)
Front: D30 (ARB) Axles Chromoly
Springs: Leaf YJ
Tires: Super Swampers 32"

You can see it for yourself if you come to the FCT:

Hey jpet.  Thanks for the reply.  I would like to join you guys someday but my jeep is far from being ready for the FCT. How can I get a hold of "willytj" and ask him more about his jeep?

Oh, not good. I just spoke with the owner this morning, he's planning to bring it down in a couple weeks for me to look at.  Sounds like I need to pass on it and keep looking.

I remember that day!  That tilt was just plain weird.

Ron's jeep is indeed very well done.  He told me that a design goal was to use parts that are easily replaceable at local auto parts stores.   Furthermore, his build quality is very good.  I plan to borrow some of his ideas on my cj3a.

Yup. If a person notices how parallel the mountain line is in the distance they can know that there was NO camera tipping in that shot

Chad I'm really not very "in the know" about the Commando's.

The 67-71 Kaiser design Jeepster preceded the AMC design Commando and I expect lots of things changed on AMC Commando's.
I think the Commando leaf springs were wider than Jeepsters.
I know the frame rails are set wider because I bought a Dauntless  that we removed from a 1970 Jeepster.
The 1970 D-225 frame brackets alone were much too wide to fit into a CJ frame.
I use the factory Dauntless CJ-5  frame brackets in the  3A / 3B frames.

Other than spring perches there's no big reason not to use a Commando Dana 30.
They are 51-1/2" wide like the other D-30 narrow tracks.

Well the easiest thing to do if you are wanting to regear a Commando axle like Ken mentioned is to get the owner to measure center to center on the spring perches and see if that coincides with what you've got.

FWIW, I started with a '72 Commando frame when building 'Frankie'.....I'm running CJ axles. My frame hangers are not Commando but the perches (for the wider springs )are welded on top of the axles (yes, unfortunately its 'sprung over'....not that I would do that again but its a long boring story)directly over the CJ perches on the bottom of the axles so I know it's close enough to work.

To simplify that explanation a little bit what I'm saying is if I wanted to undo the spring over setup all it would take (suspension wise) is a set of springs with a little more arch placed under the axles in the same spot
the stock perches ( still attached to the axles) are now.

Ron does have a well built Jeep!

Alan, What kind of ideas are you thinking about for your CJ3A?

O.K. never too late to learn....
So I checked a Jeep publication and it states the Commando frame to be exact same width as
the early CJ's.
So I was mistaken to think the Jeepster and Commando frames to be wider.
That said for anyone wondering the Dauntless Jeepster  frame brackets still won't fit a CJ frame.

My opinion now is that the Commando D30  should be do-able for CJ's.
