Are you worried about the grill becoming the weak point between the two fenders now?
Maybe a crossover similar to a shock tower brace so the fender doesn’t want to cave in since those won’t dent.

Hi, Love your jeep; I first learned about it in Crawl magazine in 2016, and it was the inspiration to buy my project in 2017, and join this forum. Lots of information on this board, and your thread. Keep up the good work!
Regards, Daan

Some of you have heard this story before, but I got the name "BAM BAM" from an experience 10 years ago while driving down Tincup Pass with "Gen'l Willys" on my first FCT. Since then, I have driven Tincup Pass several times and each time, I am not 100% sure where this exact stretch is. The trail keeps changing over time. Anywho, m38mike is filming Bob, Arick and myself coming down the pass. It's not on the video, but somewhere at this spot or maybe before, Mike says, "Here comes bam bam", because my jeep was bouncing all over the place. I remember saying, "that would be a cool name for a jeep" 4 years later, BAM BAM was a reality. Those were the good o'l days. Back then, the FCT was only Friday, Saturday, and Sunday with guests arriving on Thursday evening. Arick, Bob Firth, and myself asked Mike if we could come out early for the whole week so it was just 4 jeeps for the first 4 days of the tour. We even went into Salida for breakfast each morning at Patio Pancake. Then next year, Josh and Co also showed up early and from there on out, it was a week long event. Look how young we look in the video. |

Thank you for the content you create. It is both motivational and inspirational. Bam Bam, Rango and Rojo and a few others have acted as the blueprints for my build. I imagine the same could be said for other folks on this forum.

Hi all,
I’m behind on my updates. 1st, Bernie Carson made me a backup Jeep: Even has the munched out comp corners: Some people are just so kind. Bernie is one of them. I get lots of Jeep toys but not as personal as this. Thanks!! ...................... 2nd, a new windshield I’ve had this a while so it’s dirty: It has cams to lock it into the cage for quick installation/removal. When I have it out, it stows up on the roof: The old one had a rubber gasket around it. This one has a chamfer milled around the perimeter and it sits into the cage. It keep rain out as good as the old one. Notice in the pic, I have a new tow rope. I’ve always had a manilla rope on the front for looks but I’ve wanted a functional synthetic rope. All I could find were ropes that were colors other than brown or tan. Metcalf pointed me to a company called ASR that makes this rope in tan. This one is 7/8” diameter by 30’ long. It is actually about 1-1/8” diameter and shrinks to 7/8” diameter under load. The rope is kinetic so it is much easier on you and the person you are tugging. Now I can back up, hit the gas, and pop someone out of a snag and not even feel the jerk. Very nice! I also added these stand-offs to wrap it around. They also close off my tow hooks for safety. Springs: I broke another spring in Moab. Since Grandpa’s Jeep and Rojo and Kane are all doing fine on stock replacement springs, I decided to go back to stock springs: 9 leaf 42” crowns in the rear ... and 9 leaf 39-3/4” CJ5 springs in front. The fronts don’t have a military wrap but since I had these in my barn, I decided to use them. I’ll probably get military wrap ones in the future. I also eliminated the anti-sway bar in the rear. I wheeled these at Rush Springs a couple weekends ago and I was satisfied with my dynamics. Too early to tell if this is a good or bad move. Every set of springs I’ve ever used has been good when they are new. I’ll make a judgement by fall. This will certainly help me with having more clearance on my spring hangers though. That has always been my Achilles heel. .... more .... Edited by jpet - 04 May 2021 at 9:45am |

The C channel or “step” in the tub had been broke to pieces for a while. Floor is sagging, dented and falling apart in some areas, ... so I’m going to replace the step. Hopefully with a piece of rectangular tubing if I can get what I need. If not, I’ll make another channel from 11 gauge. This will be connected to the gun mount, frame, and rock sliders to give the tub strength and give me a good spot to anchor my seats and belts. Fuel tank: This has been an odd problem for some time.: ... even though I have the tank out of the Jeep, I’m showing you how it is vented. This line runs above the tank, up the windshield and has a rollover valve at the top. The fitting at the tank is a 90 but it is at the top of the tank. No part of the vent is below the tank and the outlet is well above the tank. Still on hot days and or when the motor is stressed, the fuel gets hot, the tank pressurizes and pushes fuel out the top of the vent. Even when the vehicle is level It’s like once fuel can reach the top of the tank, the pressure pushes it into the line and will not let it run back into the tank. I guess my next move is to put another vent line in the back of the tank so that I can run it straight up without a 90 degree fitting. The current one I use is under my seat so I have to come out with a 90. Edited by jpet - 04 May 2021 at 10:02am |

Love the model of BamBam Bernie made. I can see it perched on a pile of rocks on your desk! As usual, lots of thought going into your mods. I'll be interested to see how you like going back to stock rear springs. I'm guessing that with the longer stroke shocks still there you'll still get a lot more travel than stock.

Jeff what are your thoughts if you get rid of the roll over valve for a system like this article (about halfway thru for venting)

Love the jeep model, lots of character. Interesting to see you have reverted back to off the shelf springs, after all the development you put into bespoke springs; I suppose it is much more practical if you are away from home and need a spare.

Just out of curiosity. Are you still running the trailer wheels that you put together with original centers? If so are they holding up well?

I was talking to Jim from Jeepsterman.com. He is going to start offering a 6" wide wheel with safety humps that looks pretty close to a KH. I didn't take a pic but you can sorta see them from this angle: ...they also clear disk brakes. It looks very much like a KH except the bolt hole area which kinda looks like a Ford wheel. I'm going to talk to him at the fall reunion. His manufacturer may be able to change that. |

Are you still able to utilize those 12" travel shocks with the new springs?

Maybe you could add some volume to the tank vent line. Like put a big fuel filter in the line. Maybe it will be enough volume and create a place which disrupts the surface tension from holding fuel in the line. Just an idea.

More changes:
I have never broken a 30 spline axle, but this is what they look like: ... so, I’m going with 35 spline chromoly: I don’t plan on breaking these. We shall see. Now, I have to change the carrier assembly so I’m going with OX: This one is air actuated. I’m surprised at how simple the air cylinder is: The slide pin that the fork moves on is also the piston. Just apply air. When you look at it, you would think it leaks but it doesn’t. I like it. .... anywho, I’m also re-gearing to 4.10 diffs to compliment the X98 tc that is about to go back in. Thx 4 reading. Edited by jpet - 05 Mar. 2022 at 8:48pm |

Curious minds want to know what your 30 spline axles were.
I assume you are using the D30 rotors. As to the question you once posed to me about E brakes: I think these are going to work well and will detail it on the sanity check thread one of these days.
