Hi fellas, I put a sealed bid on a 1989 Ford 2120 tractor with 4x4 and FEL. The bids will be opened at 2PM today (11/24/15) The local parks and rec have owned it since new. The issue is when it sits it wont engage forward or reverse. They used the bucket to rock the tractor lightly for a few minutes then it will engage the trans and drive. I believe it has hydraulic shuttle shift(HSS). Any suggestions on this issue? Also are these decent tractors?
Thanks.

Never worked on a shuttle shift, but it sounds like something sticking in the shuttle valve. First thing I would check is make sure there isn't any water in the hydraulics and it has the right fluid in it and change the filer(s). Maybe rocking it forces a valve back where it isn't bypassing fluid(only a guess).
As for being a good tractor, I have a 1720 and its a great little tractor. Sadly though, aftermarket support is very little on this series and when parts are available the parts are high priced.

If I win the tractor I will check all the easy stuff first before splitting the tractor in two. As far as parts go, I seen old posts abut shuttle clutches costing $1500 just or parts. I just wont know what Im up against until I can get it home. I have to win the bid first. Bids are opened in 20 minutes.

Thanks for the reply David

Once you get it home let me know, I have an excellent tractor mechanic on the team and he did his time on New Hollands, so Ford related.....

I drove one of these in the 1990s with the hydraulic shuttle clutch. I don't remember any easy shuttle clutch adjustments or troubles.

I might have it mixed up with the smaller 1920 tractor in use at the same time, but I liked the 2 step clutch that would let me engage the PTO before the tractor started to move. I could spin up the bushhog or a 3 point mounted broadcast spreader without having to move the machine. More handy than you might think.

I broke the turnbuckle brackets on the 3 point off many times on the smaller tractor. hard turns with a 16 plate disk. I don't think the 2120 ever broke anything important.

Oh yeah, and the plastic blinky yellow lights on the roll bar break off easily bushhogging tree lines.
The front driveshaft tube bends when the kid parks the tractor on TOP of one of those big green power boxes. I don't know how that kid got it up on top of that box. I ran a steel rod down the tube and got the kink out of it. back in the game. The floorboards bend up nicely on rocks and stuff and after you rip the step off on a tree stump, you have plenty of belly clearance.

Otherwise, the 1920 and the 2120 were 8 hour a day machines year after year.

I love  how stude-a-willys just pops in on occasion with some random bit of wisdom or experience. Hi Stephen. I think I broke the hitch points off the disk when I was "the kid" making the hard turns that I shouldn't.

Focus on fixing small issues first then go with the big ones like hydrolic valve
