Here is some new original canvas information. This front roof piece belongs to Hamhog:
A little back story. His jeep is #135301. It is a very original and intact jeep that still has the original top that came from the dealer. His top is the early style (10 piece with door handles not on doors), but the tub on his jeep has 4 holes per side where the lower door sockets mount which would indicate that the jeep was designed for a later style top and doors. anywho, There are some differences in his front roof compared to the others we have seen in this thread. If you remember, the CJ2A BOM indicates that the front roof's top deck is a single piece. Sean's front roof is a single piece but Roger's is 2 piece with a french seam down the center. Other than Sean's I have not seen any other early style 2A front roofs that did not have the single french seam down the center mullen46cj2a also has an early top with one seam down the center. Hamhog's however has two seams: This is the first one I have seen like this. Another oddity that I have found in his top that I have not seen before is the stitching of the binding. All other original tops that I have seen have the binding sewn on with a chain stitch but this one has a lock stitch: Looks to me that the sewing machine that sewed this flap on did not have a reverse so at the end of the stitch, they lifted the foot pulled the fabric forward an inch and sewed over the end again to lock the end of the thread. Binding and turn buttons are the same: The fabric is a drill and lighter than what I have seen but I think similar to some that Roger has posted. This fabric is about .025 thick: The distance between eyelets is still the same as original and they slip over the windshield fasteners with ease. In length it has shrank more than an inch:

With respect to the number of seams in the top, my speculation is that it was simply a matter of conserving the material, the BOM be damned. I doubt if there will ever be a definitive answer, though.
Hamhog's Jeep is really special, of course. |

Maybe I should not feel so guilty about crooked stitching:

Boy that top looks rough! I should have shown you the runs in the paint on the firewall/floor board. Someone must have been sleeping in the QC department.

Hi All,
I like to collect some information on late style slate gray tops. If anyone has any information on original top pieces, I'd appreciate any contributions. Here is an original rear flap from a late, 7 piece top: Back side: The straps are interesting. Only one of the straps on this piece is gray: The buckles and tips appear to be gray as well. The rest of the straps have faded or changed color due to weather I suppose. They actually look pink This one has faded to natural on the back side The binding is similar to what I have seen on some OD ops: ...... but it is sewn with a lock stitch. Steel window frames .... again if anyone has any late style, 7 piece, 2A pieces, I'd love to see some pictures. |

Here's some pics from my barnfind top- er whats left of it. There is no zipper in either door. It has a single seam doubled stitched on the forward section of the top, also the bows are rivets to prevent twisting. One thing I noted was the extra doublers at the side curtain tie downs and at the rear curtain on the left and right of the tailgate. Hope these help you. Oops gonna have to resize them. Post them shortly. Edited by willysnut - 23 Dec. 2012 at 7:04pm |

Thanks Jeff. Really good information. Everything there looks typical of one of Roger B's tops. That is a fine set of early bows and of course the rare window frames.
Single french seam down the center of the front roof. Single rivet turnbuttons Rivet style bows Driver's door has no turn signal zipper
Thanks for posting! |

Jeff,
Sorry for the delay in comparing the canvas samples. Very nice weather today North of you so I ran out and got the top out and layed your samples out. The weave of the darker sample looks more correct when compared to mine.

The weave may be closer but the color of the the lighter on is obviously closer. I can get the lighter canvas in #10.
What say you on color? |

Jeff,
I just took delivery of a full two piece top and one side curtain with Talon Zippers.
Has a lace in front instead of the twist fastners. Would this be for a 3A?

I'll bring it along to the Reunion so you can see it in person.
Maybe you can tell me if the front could be modded for a 2A.
