Sure thing. I see the straps on that top are turning pink like the piece that I have.

Are you sure that your's weren't once gray, the weathered to pink, then finally weathered to khaki tan?

This piece has all three colors:

What color are your buckles and tips?

Sorry for the delay in comparing the canvas samples. Very nice weather today North of you so I ran out and got the top out and layed your samples out. The weave of the darker sample looks more correct when compared to mine.

Canvas comes in many types and weights. The #10 (dark grey swatch) is no. 10 (15 oz./sq. yard) Canvas duck. This is relatively lightweight compared to the canvas tops I have seen. The no. 8 (18 oz.)
will be more substantial. This is the same weight typically used in director's chairs and other patio furniture. If you are looking for something heavier than no. 8 duck -- it is 'natural' colored canvas and any dyed stock would be a special dye lot - hundreds of yards minimum order.

I recommend Big Duck Canvas as a source of canvas duck in a variety of colors. I have purchased bulk canvas from them for another project. http://www.bigduckcanvas.com/ They sell 30" and 60" roll stock by the yard.

Hi Mark,

Those samples in the photo actually came from Big Duck Canvas. Since there is no mil-spec on gray canvas, I don't know how much it is likely to shrink. What is your experience?

I too prefer to use #8 for its weight and durability as you have said, but I have seen original canvas in both #8 and #10 and or a mixture of the two. On some pieces they even used a drill weave. Most every original door I've seen has a fabric that is a light weight drill weave that is .025 thick.   Of course the door canvas is supported by a frame.

Do you know of a good source for gray strap material? I'm looking for 1" wide type 3. So far the best source I know of wants about $4.00 per yard . I can also only find straps material that matches the lighter gray.

Thanks for the input

I am using nylon webbing on the project currently underway (see photo below).

After some (very cursory) searching, I think that your best shot would to buy the widely available 1" no. 3 canvas web in white or natural and die it to the color you need. You can get a very close match using Rit dye. Military style tabs and buckles (brass painted black) are very easy to find.

Here is my project - classic Tripolina chairs for camping:

Jeff,

I actually have a roll of the white I wanted to try this with but trying to achieve a khaki tan rather than gray to match my windshield tie down to make top stowage straps for the left rear fender.

I'll try to remember to bring it to Hudson...

It is currently listed on eBay:

Looks like the guy is from California.  That makes 4 different sightings of rubber backed canvas.

Jeff, what are your thoughts on 'why?'.

Would seem to make more sense if you had a rubberized fabric to use for something weatherproof that the rubber would be on the outside........just thinking out loud. (?)

I'm not sure. Perhaps the rubber could not handle sun exposure?

I'll bet that rubber would not stand up the the direct sunlight and heat, esp. rubber stuff made back then. They just did not have the UV protection we can get today.

Perhaps, although tires seemed to hold up okay though not forever.

I guess I'm basing my statement on old rubber boots and rubber tarps and such I've seen. They dry out and crack fairly quickly. Something like a jeep top I would think would not last but a few years.

Bob, you are probably correct.  And, the rubber is on the inside for whatever reason!

I hope you guys don’t mind me putting this CJ3A information here.

Here are some early CJ3A doors I have:

They have steel window frames.   It is hard to tell but the canvas is gray colored. Some interesting features I noticed.

1. The doors are painted olive drab
2. The windows are a flexible vinyl. .045 thick
3. The binding on one of the doors is olive drab.

Gray canvas, OD frames, Gray binding:

OD binding:

Window:

All the 2As I’ve ever disassembled have had polycarbonate windows.

Can someone identify these ?
I thought this is a 3a door because the diagonal rod is below the latch.
It has .040 vinyl windows and the hardware is green.

I believed this to be a 2A door because the diagonal rod is above the latch.
It has a window frame and the hardware is black.

Both look to have piping that is a tad darker than the canvas.
