It's nothing difficult, I use a plunger pump that goes in a 1 gallon jug. It helps on the transmission side if you put the left front wheel up on a ramp or block. It will give more room to work the pump. If your drained oil is really dirty you might want to give it a flush with cheap oil before you put the GL-1 in.

It's even easier to fill the tranny if you take off the top (shifter) cover.  That way you can pour in the oil and watch for it to get to the bottom of the fill plug, then replace the cover.  No need to get under the Jeep or have oil run down the side of the tranny when you get a little too much oil in there.
There's a reason it's called Ol' Unreliable

Will this also work for the transfer case?

Beautiful sunny summer day, 2 bloody knuckles and a few profane rambles... that’s how far I’ve gotten.  None of my sockets fit, again “a real beginner” are the drain and fill plugs 3/4 inch and do I need a square socket?  Confused

I use a 9/16" open end wrench on mine. Of coarse if they are over tighten and in there for 40 years it maybe a chore.

If you pour oil in the transmission it will equalize and flow over into the transfer case.

It's a 1/2" pipe plug but that refers to the the threads, not the head. As Mike said, a 9/16 wrench will fit if it is a square head plug. A 17mm box end or socket will also fit unless the shoulders are rounded off.

This is that one application where an Adjustable end wrench (cresent wrench for the untrained) works very well. When I was a kid doing Car Care services maybe 5-10 a day we always used an Adjustable End Wrench for the drain plugs cause there were so many different types and sizes (well except VW those we used a HUGE allen wrench the Boss painted Yellow and had a lanyard like the restroom key on cause he was tired of looking for it LOL.

We try real hard not to make anyone unwelcome. I don't believe I have seen the word "inept" posted here before now...

Welcome to the Forum! At some point in time every poster on here knew little or nothing about jeeps (it may have been many, many years ago for some of us) but as they learned, they managed to fall in love with the little trucks.

If you have a project post some pictures. We can't get enough pictures on here.

Took 2 weeks off moving my daughter to Denver (home safe), jumped back into the tranny/t-case fluid change... done in one hour!  So easy, throughout I was thinking “something has to go wrong”.  Oil I changed was actually very clean.  Thanks for all input 😀
