I haven't been paying attention when you were doing the R&D on this, are the 'longer arms' referred to like the one I pictured (2 pc.) or is the arm itself just a longer one piece arm?

Art,
What are the part numbers and what are the dimensions of the arms? If it is a 5" mirror, then that's got to be thje longer arm.

Thanks Art! Are those yours? If so can I get some measurements. Roc, the longer arms I plan on making are a OAL 16" 3/4 seamless carbon steel tubing with the lower base end reinforced .210 +/- .010 and a mirror end .110 +/- .010 just like the original I own. This week I'm going to x-ray my 3A arm to see how much the end is reinforced. I'll post a picture of the film for all to see.

Thanks Jack! That makes 12 "accounted" for and I'm going to hold it there for now, just in-case something happens If these 12 go off with out a hitch I'll offer up the other two.

Matt ment to get in for one earlier too, but I can wait if need be.
I wish the NOS Truck mirrors were mine... just a picture for reference.
I bid on some like them twice and they were about as bad as bidding on NACOs.
Part number is in the file name 666767 if you check properties.

Matt:
Bolt and screw sizes are the actual sizes, but holes are just a tad bigger to allow easy fit. There's an interesting read here. They have some bizarre drill sizes!: Tap & Drill IndexSean |

That is the number for the 3A mirror assembly in the '49 Parts List so it was used on more than the truck, I gather.

Great reference, Sean. Those numbered drill sizes are usually found only in machine shops. I'm looking at an old Morse Machinist's Practical Guide that is a 90 page spiral bound 3 1/4" by 5 1/4" pocket book from the dark ages that I can barely read. it's nice to see a table with numbers that I can see!

Yes, that reputed NOS at the end appears to be like the one I got from hillbilly21. I hadn't noticed before, but while the back of the mirror is crumbly rust, the mirror retainer ring is all there - no doubt stainless. Also, it has the flats on the stud. Too bad, that as Paul accurately described, the mirror is "NFG". I'll put that arm on the '47 and use the one the Matt is making for the '46.

Art and Randy don't worry I'll hook you guys up if I can, I may make 20 and drop the longer 3A arms. The longer arms are much better design in my opinion! the ends are stronger and the mounted mirror height is driver friendly. I was using a 3A arm on my Jeep and was happy.
Sean, thanks for the link. We have a huge board in the shop with all that data, it makes it simple! I've all those drill bits too

Matt,
I would be interested in one also, you can put me on the second list. My shoulder replacement is 2 weeks from today, couple of months recovery, then I can start working on the Jeep again so it will be a while before I have to think about rearview mirrors . I've got an original base bracket and am looking at it trying to figure out how hard it would be to reproduce it. (it's got some interesting notches that I presume are to limit the swing of the arm, or so it seems.) Anyway, thanks again for all you contribute here. |

Wouldn't those made of stainless that you mentioned be stouter? If you were doing them for the same price that seems like the way I would go.

Gale, I think the number is going to be around 20 so your in (I think)
Roc, I have the stainless tubing in stock. Do you want the short 2A arm or longer 3A arm? Yes these few will be the same price and should be very strong.

Ok, I ordered enough tubing to make 20 arms but I went with a little thicker walled tubing so the ends are stronger and won't vibrate the mirror as much. 0.625 (5/8) with a wall thickness of 0.058 instead of the 0.049. That should bring the end thickness from 0.098 to 0.116 and originals where 0.110
