Today I looked at a 48 CJ-2a #173301. The engine number on the oval pad behind the oil filter was 442-91509D, casting number was 638632. I checked your database and saw only one other engine with a 442 prefix. Does the 442 mean that the engine was meant for something besides a vehicle? Such as a welder or generator etc? Would this be a chain or gear drive?

Additionally, the head was not drilled/tapped for a heater water pipe. Is this unusual?

Thanks!
Randy

I found lots of pictures and other data....looks to be a popular body style for the hot-rodders...

Looks like there were two models, the 441 and the 442.....production stopped at the outbreak of the war....

So later when Willys started producing the CJ-3a they picked up that numbering system again, with 451, 452, 453 etc....interesting...

I'm looking to find more information like the VIN for what I been told and found of a 1945 CJ-2A with a Chassis Number of 28423 and a Motor Number of 29363.  Not sure if this is a 1945 or 1946 seeing what I have read so far on the web page.  This was sold from a Fire Dept. that I was on back in late 1966 and don't know where it went.

That chassis number should also be the serial number, and if so, makes it a 1946 CJ2A...

Halfway down the page of the following link:

Here is the serial number of the motor that I have in my '48.
The friend I got it from told me the engine literally came out of a 1940 Willys coupe that his friend's brother made into a hot rod. I added later model oiling, Pertronix's and 12v alternator. Runs great!

Just to let everyone know I have heard from Sean and the his data/tech site will be off line for a while, but he has assured me no data has been lost. Hopefully they will be back up and running soon.
