Hello to all you people that are crazy about Flat Fender Jeeps. I bought my 1947 CJ2A last year and it is getting close to ready for the fun. My Uncle (A WWII South Pacific vet) had a Flat Fender he used as a daily driver for many years. It was about twelve miles one way to work. He once told me that he had been driving the old jeep so long that he didn't need to steer it anymore that it knew it's way home. On a page at this web site is an article by R. Harold West. In the article is listed the starting and ending serial numbers for each years production and the total units built for that year. If you addthe units built for the years 1945 thru 1949 as reflected on that page you come up with a total
production number of 214,760. THIS NUMBER IS WRONG! THE CORRECT NUMBER IS 214,764!!!
For the year 1945 the total units built is correct. They subtracted starting Serial Number 10001
from Ending Serial Number 11824 and showed 1824 units built. This was accomplished by subtracting inclusive numbers. For the years 1946 through 1949 they didn't recognize they were
subtracting inclusive numbers. There are other places on the CJ2A web site where these incorrect numbers are cited. How do we get these errors corrected?

Old Grizzley is correct. Except for the first row for 1945, the "Units built" column is one fewer than it should be because, as Old Grizzley stated, it appears that Harold subtracted the beginning number from the ending number for each year, rather than from the starting number of the next year.
Welcome to the forum, Old Grizzley. Don't let these wise guys put you off! I'd think that Russ, the site owner and administrator, would want to correct the values in the table. I don't think that anyone other than the original posters should be changing incorrect values in their posts. After all, there is a ton of wrong information stated in posts around here. |

Sam, i am not sure what exactly you are trying to say here, but if i read your reply correctly, i disagree....
10001 was the first 2A.....11824 was the 1824th 2A......there is no subtraction/addition involved, there WAS a total of 1824 units, not 1823 nor 1825....what would have changed the actual number of units would be had the 1st 2A been numbered 10000....
if i misunderstood your anology and i am incorrect, i apologize....the "total units" for '45 is correct as printed, 1824 units...
otherwise, Grizzly is correct, the total numbers are off by 4 total units....1 unit for each line after 1945
overall, the 224764 (last serial number known) is actually the total number of units built since the numbers run sequentially from 10001
low

Low, take a look at what you wrote and what you bolded in my reply. I said that every row is wrong except the 1945 row! I accept your apology!
Edit: and that is what Old Grizzley said too!

Sam, I thank you for your reply. I don't want to cause any friction. I
just saw an error and I thought it should be corrected. My Dad always said
that if I was going to do something I should do it right.
I sure appreciate this web site and I hope to learn as much as possible
from it. I have a nice 1947 CJ2A that I have invested a lot of $$$ in and
still have more to do to get it where I want it. I wish my uncle that I mentioned
in my initial post was still around. He would be a great help as he was an
outstanding mechanic among several things he did in an outsanding manner.
He an I would have loads of fun with our two flat fender jeeps!! He was my
hero .

You didn't cause any friction. If you've lurked around forum a bit, I'm sure you've seen there's a fair amount of good-natured banter that is shoveled around.
Post some photos of your 2A when you get the chance. |

It took me a few days to check the calculations (long subtraction with pencil and paper). But I agree old Grizz is correct! Who knows perhaps one of these "lost" 2As in original factory condition is waiting for me in an old barn somewhere. That would be about right.
Good to have someone checking the facts, WFB
