How different are they? Would a 3A headlight bucket work on a 2A grille?

On CJ’s the Autolite headlamp assembly was used prior to the 1953 CJ-3B.
After 3B the Hall headlamp assembly was used.
Grill knock outs are different from Autolite to Hall.

As I feared... My impulse purchase of a "CJ3A" headlight bucket while eBay shopping on Margarita Monday actually looks like a CJ3B headlight bucket. This seems to confirm it.

Not the best pic but it shows the back of an Autolite (1945-1953) vs the Hall (1953-1971).

It works now, thanks for that. That confirms it. The ebay seller probably just made an honest mistake.

Hall is on the left and Autolite on the right, correct.

Yes the Hall is complete with bulb and chrome ring. Autolite has a flatter and not always chromed door ring.
The assemblies are 100% interchangable if it were not for the shape of the grill knock outs.
The quality is very similar but if I had to vote for one I would perhaps give the edge to the earlier Autolite lamps mainly because of the more solid adjusting springs. Also the mounting flange is wider. That said the Hall wiring harnesses and lamp plugs tend to hold up better.
