Well boys, I've been watching for a Jeep for my niece. I was driving old Chigger around and spotted a nice looking CJ-7. Super clean, rust free, new paint and tires, etc. A test drive didn't disappoint although I did pick up on an exhaust leak and a slightly noisy rear diff. Long story short, I ended up buying it for myself. 

I fixed the exhaust leak and pulled the rear cover. Not much I could see to cause noise, but it appeared that perhaps it had some water sitting in there once upon a time. I'm thinking a bearing may be going out.

Can anyone here suggest where is a good source for buying Timken bearings these days?  Or is there another quality brand as good or better?

AMC model 20 or Dana 44?  2-piece axles?  Might try rock auto

AMC 20 in the back. The front has a Dana 30. 

Stupid tall gears; 2:73s. I plan on getting some driving time in first, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to upgrade to 3:54s. The new tires are 30" tall.

Looks like two sets of gears, one-piece flanged axle kit for the 20, and a spicer limited slip are about $1800.00. But they don't seem to offer a master install kit with all the bearings so I thought I might start collecting them now. In my younger days I wouldn't ever buy anything but Timken for my cars. Maybe there's something else as good now?

I have bought thousands of dollars worth of deep stamped NOS USA made Timken taper roller bearings through eBay. 
Also NOS Fafnir and MRC ball bearings
Usually much cheaper too.
You just have to look close at the pics and the boxes to see what vintage your getting.
I shy away from the newer laser stamped bearings because the markings wear off.

Update: I got lucky... the bad bearing was an axle bearing. Replaced all the seals and bearings on both sides and it's a happy diffy now.
