I have some hardware that I'd like to "blacken" and I'm wondering what you all do for that. I've heard some use cold blue but I've heard that's not rust preventative once the oil gets washed off.
I've also heard of Hot bluing in oil but I'm not sure I want to subject my hardened bolts to that kind of heat. I've heard some people say 300-400, and others say around 550 degrees. I've head of Caswell Black Oxide, but that also needs to be oiled and I'm wondering if that will rust once the WD-40 is washed off. I've sent them a message asking about it. Edit: They replied back and said that they would need to be coated in clear coat to keep them from rusting. I"m trying to keep away from doing any sort of painting. What are some other options for "blackening" the metal? This would be on sandblasted metal. Fleet Farm sells bulk grade 8 bolts in gold, and grade 5 bolts in black (not fine threaded) what do they use for that?

I have restored two vehicles from the ground up. After I got them all in pieces, I send everything off to be refinished. They clean and strip off any old coating. I do either silver or black cadmium. Someday, the 2A will get the same treatment.

The "gold" doesn't last long either. McMaster-Carr has black "ultra corrosion resistant coated" grade 5 but I have no experience with them. I suspect you can get high strength stainless (180k psi) in black someplace but I haven't looked.

I decided to go with the black oxide system. We'll see how it works.

I have used Kg Industries Gun-Kote 2400 series to great effect on many fasteners. Parkerizing is also another option on some fasteners. Both coatings hold up quite well to corrosion/wear.

How does that stuff work on threads? I would think it is a material that adds thickness to the steel making it hard to turn on the threads, and easier to come off there.

Goes on very very thin (with airbrush) and after baked is very durable, does not interfere with the threads at all, of course the threads will show wear with use as any coating/plating will.
Technical data sheet indicates dry film thickness between 10 and 18 microns…..no problem! Edited by Reconnoiter - 24 Mar. 2022 at 2:27pm |

IME, Parkerizing has almost no effect on threads. My friend used to Parkerize reground camshafts on his back yard barbecue. The internal threads for the camshaft gear was unaffected. We built a vat for this purpose after he was sure of his process.
