I'm always noticing interesting vehicles that I absolutely don't need; some are more tempting than others. This past summer I was out at a cousin's ranch for family reunion, and he has an old Jeepster Commando out to pasture. It's been there far too long to resurrect IMO, but I was thinking about the drivetrain. Apparently certain years had a flanged Dana 44 in the back and a 27 or 30 up front. I wonder about the t-case and trans anybody, know if they used the same ones for all years, or switched it up depending on year?
Not sure what year this is but I'm guessing probably late`60s.

This does not answer your question, but the 225 Dauntless engine in my '2A came from a '68 Commando. Does the one you refer to have V6 or other?

I'm not sure at this point; weeds are grown up around it. I looked at it from the road and didn't get out of my truck. I believe I saw fender badges that look like the v-6 emblems. I'm going to drop some subtle questions the next time I see my cuz.

Will do. It's been such a long hot, dry summer in Texas that I hardly can make myself leave the AC. The first little weak fall cool front came in last night, it feels so much better.
I would like to do a up close inspection; if it's easily savable, I wouldn't want to just rob the drivetrain. They units aren't right for my CJ2A anyway. If it's halfway between gone and not so bad, it might be just right for a trail rig.

The off-set flanged D44 were only used on 1970-1971 model year Jeeps.

The earliest offset flanged axle I have seen is on the earliest known Renegade I that was built in September of 1969 (1970 model year). I nearly bought that Jeep but he was still looking for the title at that time.

My guess is Yes. After doing some research, I think Spicer 20 t-cases were teamed with centered Dana 44s. I'm now doubting any of the commando drivetrain would be usable in a stock configuration CJ.

Bring a "twice barreled shotgun" for the buzz bugs (rattlers) around in the weeds to keep you safe.

Good advice. It seems like that part of the state has more copperheads than rattlers though; I carry a handy little 20g Remy pump.
