What are the signs of a bad condenser? I have read that it can cause starting problems and problems while running. Can it cause one and not the other? Is it always both? Are there any other signs?

Just had a condensor issue with my Dad's JD 140 tractor. It started right up and after running a bit started to spit and sputter. At first we thought it was lean (carb issue?) but choking it didn't help and there was no fuel restriction.  Then I thought maybe the coil. I felt the coil and it was not hot at all, then I felt the condensor (for no reason) and noticed that it was loose in the bracket. Basically the condensor was intermittently not grounded. We loosened the bracket, stuck a small nail between the condensor and bracket and tightened the screw. Viola. Runs like a champ. So if the condensor isn't grounded well, it will cause the engine to spit and sputter. If open it would probably also spit and sputter or at least result in very rapid point wear. If it's shorted, I'd guess there would be no spark.

If you are looking for a condenser recommendation I have read on a couple other forums/pages where guys have had good results with Bosch brand condensers look to a Late 60's early 70's VW application.  A 12V condenser is a 12V condenser as long as the mount and connections work.

Bad condenser = rough running engine, =weak spark, burned points over time or no spark if it completely fails.

   Alpine:

Thanks for asking because I am also "condenser-dumb" and don't know much about them.

I have an old Ferguson TO-20 gas tractor I acquired from an old aunt, and it sputters and spits like a lean-fuel-mixture, so I am going to check it close.

I have had them do both issues, My jeep would run for several miles and then act like you are running out of gas and the engine miss and have no power then die. let sit a while and it would start and run fine for a few more miles and then same thing. it ended up being a bad (new) condenser.  The last issue I had with one I had helped a friend repair his engine and we had put in a new set of points and Cond. and it ran great for a few days and then one day it just would not start, it would try but would spit and fart but no run. I changed the condenser and it fired right up and ran like a champ.   Good luck.
