So how is everyone holding up under the threat of the Corona Virus? Please don’t take my words as cavalier but while serious this may be, everyone needs to stop losing their minds. As a medical professional, (I know, I’m only a dentist) this virus does warrant precautions but not to the point that it paralyzes a nation to economic ruin. We’ve had SARS, Polio, Swine, measles, mumps, shingles, chicken pox and all the different flu viruses. People have gotten sick and compromised people have died to a much greater extent with just the flu than with this.
Perception is key here and for some reason this has been whipped into a frenzy. I left my practice open and operated under heightened precautions until I was the last place open in my community. I closed because I didn’t want to be perceived as “irresponsible “. You know had anything gone wrong I would be the bad guy. People will still need care. Dental disease never rests. When someone is hurting I’ll still go in. Life has to go on. Truckers are still trucking, stores are still open, if we are all hunkered down we will still need supplies. People will get sick but letting this all sink to chaos and the potential for martial law is unthinkable. The media, both main stream and social will hype this to no end. It sells. They’ll be relevant again. Common sense needs to prevail. I’m serious, will we be doing this at the start of every cold & flu season? Hell no. How do you fellow jeepers cope with an involuntary vacation? I have an answer! The complete seasons of “The Rat Patrol” are on You Tube! Yes! As a kid I couldn’t watch them because it was on after my bedtime. The other kids always talked about that nights episode the next day. I just sat and listened. There are jeeps galore....even a few CJ3as and M-38s....couldn’t sneak that by me. Stay frosty gang. This too shall pass.

Wife works at a grocery store as a bookkeeper so counting money and customer service crap all day long. I sent her to work with Latex gloves and a nice bar of copper (copper kills microbial stuff on contact) she will wear the gloves when she can and the rest of the time in between hand sanitizer she can roll the copper bar around in her hand. I drive dump truck so unless someone infected gets into my truck at work I am as safe as at home. The part of this that is harshing my buzz is the 401K and worrying about the timing. I've already lost almost 25% of my savings. And wondering how long the recovery will be I plan on retiring in 6 years granted I won't need all the retirement funds at once so there is time for the balance to keep growing. BUT having a good idea whats going to happen and waiting to see if it does is worrysome.

I deployed in Oct was scheduled to fly home next Thursday but we just got extended 60 days because of the DoD Travel Ban. I'm lucky in that I'm on a fixed USAF Base and not it the field...so we started telework Monday. Aside from a sore seat from sitting so long I'm fine and can "sit" this out as long as needed.
Kids are at home with online school work. Oldest - College just announced they will not be going back this semester. Youngest is a Senior in HS so I feel sorry for her as we don't know if they will even go back. Will there be a PROM or a Graduation, Senior Pictures etc? You can't learn everything online but we understand this is the best solution in containment. The Spring Breakers lack of regard in this is sickening. It will be interesting if any spreading occurs from this stupidity alone with the nationwide travel that occurs during this annual event. Been using a lot of my time going thru old emails and updating the Bantam T3C website & database. Also started last night with a draft update of my PTO webpage. I've caught up on a lot of old series using my Firestick and even watch some I have never seen. Stay Safe and Healthy You'all!

Mark: While the VALUE of your 401K has certainly gone down, keep in mind that unless you sell the assets in your 401K, you only have PAPER loss of value. Assuming that you have purchased assets in your 401K that were of value before the COVID thing, the markets for those assets should rebound nicely when this COVID thing is resolved. It can be distressing to look at the VALUE of the portfolio today and wonder if what you worked so hard for will ever be worth what it was a month ago. Think long term...that is what a 401K plan is anyway. Those who panicked the last couple of weeks were short-term speculators that were riding new market highs week after week a short while ago and were not looking at the fundamentals of the stocks they were investing in. If what you invested in with your plan has good fundamentals, then you will be OK in the LONG RUN. I have been investing in some utility stocks for years and they are now down about 25% of their recent highs. Am I worried? No, not particularly because the local gas company is going to keep plugging along just like it has for the last 75 years... Hang in there, Mark...everything will be all right in the LONG RUN. |

Wife is already out of work - she's a contracted teacher. They are working on the whole interlink teaching thing. So that should work itself out in time.
to cope.....I spent the last week ordering as many Jeep parts as I need. In case I have to hunker down - I have stuff to do! Wifey and I just took a nice long drive. Found a state park in western MD that was pretty neat. Some to go cups of coffee and a fast food sammich.....we had a fine morning. Next week we plan to go to DC and check out the cherry blossoms. Nothing is open of course. But an early morning ride to see something pretty....sure! Why not. So we are adjusting our lives a bit and seeking some alternative adventures and we are doing just fine.....dare I say it's pushed us to make more effort to spend time together in creative ways. So, I'm not complaining at all. Being in trucking, I can tell you the supply chain is exploding. The hoarding behavior has pushed all networks to the limit. We are seeing volumes that are far exceeding even our biggest holiday numbers. We can't keep up. We are also seeing shippers out of raw materials to produce more good. Too much of our raw supplies come from overseas. I predict a slow ramp up as the raw is moving at a snail's pace right now. This ought to get real interesting in the coming weeks. So if you see a trucker out there doing his thing, tip your hat and give a thank you. They are truly moving what's left of our economy!

My youngest came home for spring break, got extended a week, then to april 5th, then told to come get her stuff. Moved her home last night, online courses for the balance of the year. It'll be interesting to see if there is a credit coming for the lost housing and meal plan...now that Im housing and feeding her, lol.
I agree this is a bit overblown, but in your scenario above Dave you've lost sight of the new mantra..."if it saves only one it was worth it" even if burning the thing down in the process So ya, I'm watching the graph line plummet and paying $18+ for a six pack of paper towels plus a six pack of TP, but I had already stocked up on the essentials (bourbon and ribeye steaks)... so we shall survive Never really went out to dinner much anyway. Funny how the folks that thought me nuts a couple years back for buying bulk 22LR and 9mm can't seem to satisfy their TP addiction. There's an irony in there somewhere Work goes on unimpeded, new company is all about the VPN, skype and paperless so I can work from damn near anywhere... the Mrs. is admin for a cpa firm...tax season, so the extended due date is kind of a break that way stretching the volume out over more time. They aren't letting folks drop off or pick up, all by mail. Outside of that, normal. We did decline a dinner invite from my FIL...84yo heart patient... really just didn't want the blame if he dropped dead, whether it was the corona(ry) or choking on the lime, lol Should the worst happen I've squirrelled away plenty of jeep stuff to refurb. Was supposed to carry me through six months of unemployment. In spite of my best efforts I only made it six weeks, so ya...I got stuff to do- Deep breath and carry on-

Cutting grass, spring trimming of shrubs, planting a few new ones all the while soaking up the sunshine in my backyard......doesn't seem to be any different than any other day. But wait.......
Toilet paper! Where is everybody going with all that TP! What are ya doing with that stuff?! Fortunately we were in good shape there when this all hit so just a 6 or 12 pack every now and then will keep up the supply. Bottled water? Yes, we buy it but not by the buggy full.....our faucets in the kitchen and bathroom still work...hot and cold, amazing no need for panic. Ground beef?......better get there when they put it out....I never knew there were enough freezers to hold all that cow meat. Restaraunts closed to dine in traffic.....long as the drive thru is serving a burger and fries we'll be OK....that not good enough? There is PLENTY of other meat...you can have steaks, ribs, chicken whatever just not ground....so just eat, don't hoard! 401k?.....I don't want to see mine until I have to pay taxes on it so I've got a little recovery time that will hopefully help by then. All in all I think if we'll calm down a little and us as much common sense as possible it'll be alright eventually.....but just not right away....that's the part everybody seems to be having trouble with. Heck, I even know a small bunch of fellers up in the edge of KY that have quarantined themselves into a garage and are building jeeps as us mere mortals go about these 'crisis trials & tribulations' of trying to fight off toilet paper hoarders.....KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK GUYS! Stay calm.....got a jeep to work on? Get to it. Got an extra bedroom that needs paint? Buy you a gallon of paint. We just have to adjust our thinking a little. Good luck folks! Take care. My office closed, and we were ordered to work remotely. After choosing to work VERY remotely for a week, my customers closed their shops to handle crowd control, toilet paper delivery, and setting up special shopping hours for those over 65. Our plants closed, auto plants closed. The governor passed a 'stay in place' order. The beaches, restroom facilities, and parking were closed, BUT the Governor was careful to point out that he didn't have the power to restrict access to the water. So as long as I don't come ashore, I'm OK. So the Food trucks are delivering to the water for a 'small fee' I spend 1 AM to 9 AM working, then look for someplace remote to hang out in a few hours of daylight, then return to my remote office to go thru the Hard drives full of old Jeep research that never had file names that made it easy to search. My wife was at home with a lung infection and pleurisy, but she is now teaching school via skype. The plan was to have her join me as soon as she was healed, but now all new arrivals here go into a 14 day quarantine. So there may be no Jeep parts or Jeeps left at home by the time she is done cleaning up around the house. |

My wife lost her job yesterday because of this whole thing. I am told to work remotely until further notice and my three kids are doing online learning. It will be interesting being together 24/7 for the foreseeable future. My kids get along fairly well, but this might change that... I am bummed for them because its field trip season. Daughter was supposed to be in Universal Studios in Orlando for a choir concert this weekend and my youngest son was supposed to go to Chicago in a few weeks. Both got cancelled of course. They were really looking forward to these trips. Son had an interesting point, the kids that are high school seniors this year are the ones born in the year of 9/11. My older two have been driving so we finally bought them a car. Been spending quality time with my son performing lotso maintenance on it getting it ready for them to drive. Should be done by tomorrow. After that, on to outdoor spring yard projects like Roc says. Then there is the next issue of the Dispatcher I'm working on when its too cold in the garage. I never understood the whole run on TP thing. Perhaps a review of ones eating habits would significantly reduce the quantity needed???? Some of the Cub Scout dads and I play poker once a month. We were going to start playing for TP, but decided it was too rich for our blood. Bill

The TP thing. Are they figuring an apocalypse where everything breaks down and nothing is being produced? Maybe TP would be the main currency for barter? 3 sheets for a packet of top ramen?

I don't care all that much about the TP. I have running water and plenty of soap. What's making me peeved right now is that I can't find the potato chips I want: Kroger brand "Classic", not "Wavy". Ordinarily I can find plenty of the Classic chips but now there aren't any. Just plenty of Wavy. How did the chips I want become so popular so suddenly??

The TP thing is exactly the same here in the UK.
If people are genuinely scared, then I can understand why TP is right up there in terms of necessities. But I think Bill is on to something with the dietary reference. Here the absolute "must haves" for surviving the apocalypse are 1) TP 2) Baked beans. Seriously - is that a wise choice?

My wife works at a hair salon so shes home as they are all closed down, my oldest is home from college, they have switched to the online classes for the rest of the semester and we have to go empty her room before the end of the month. My youngest is doing the online thing for her high school classes. I've been working from home since February so nothing really has changed for me. I did order a bunch of parts for my current project, hopefully I get some time to work on it once the house/yard stuff is done. Costco had a 50 person limit on the people in the store so there was a lineup of about 150 people waiting to get in, how does that help stop the spread! Hope this goes by quickly, otherwise the price of jeep projects might start to rise as people finish all of their jeeps!

Being retired and living in the country, you would think I would be pretty much self-isolating without issues. So far, it has been pretty normal, except for finding bread flour. A trip to the grocery store takes anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour round-trip travel time so it is normally a once a week affair. We are will stocked on most staples.
My wife bakes most of our bread and just happened to be in need of bread flour last week. The two closest stores had no flour of any variety, so I decided to order her preferred brand (King Arthur) online. Nothing on Amazon or the company Web site. Started searching Walmart stores in surrounding towns. Found 3 bags listed in stock in a store in the next county and put them in my cart. In the time that it took to reach checkout, they were gone. Damn, beginning to look like I'd be eating whole wheat bread for a while. I waited a couple of days, then drove to a Kroger store on the far side of town. Rural King is just across the street, so I could combine errands. There was plenty of King Arthur bread flour on the shelve, so I purchased 3 and didn't feel guilty. All purpose flour was all gone. Strange. Perhaps there are no bread makers on the north side of town. We are blessed and know it. So far, the only inconvenience had been a cancelled annual vacation to FL with our son and family scheduled for this week. So no week long visit with grandkids. My son is chief tech officer at a bank and not going anywhere. My daughter in law is an MD who practices with a rehab group. She is now the lone MD at their rehab hospital. She is the lone internist in the group. The other docs have been assigned to other hospitals to prevent cross contamination. No visits with any of them for a while. I've made a list of a dozen projects that I need to get done, mostly Jeep related. Retirement has made it easy to say, "I'll start on that tomorrow." I'm trying to use this time in some constructive way that keeps me from watching too much news and the stock market. Barry

Forgot to mention in my earlier post that I moved my 401K balance but only after I had already lost $45K.
Being in the Federal Thrift Savings Plan we do have a safe option where we can move money and invest in one named the Government Securities Investment Fund guaranteed no loss but would typically only pays about 0.13% a month. People say its just on paper but when you are scheduled to retire in 2022 this could have been another $100K earnings or more in the next 12m so will this recover in that short of time?
