So can I respond to the op here if I have no intention of purchasing the said crate engine?

Sorry, didn't see it was already there. I posted here for the discussion about the rarity and nothing more. Delete it if you wish.

Not an MB engine. Not an actual crate engine as it is a rebuild but not a Willys rebuild since its not painted Red. This is an engine rebuilt at .020 over by some machine shop and put in a Wood box. I saw a true Military Crate engine in about 1977 and the crate was an open slate style not an enclosed box. The pallet was also the size of the crate. This engine has a Later Ribbed Head with .014" valve clearance. so not an MB engine. Possible M-38 engine except those were marked .016" and their serial numbers started with MC or if a replacement engine RMC.  Also they give the serial number as a 5 digit number when all the MB engines had a 6 digit serial number based on this research from the G503 page

This page shows what the various Heads would look like NO MB engine had a Ribbed Head that is a Civilian head.

To bad the Dyno info is missing.

I was going to say 5000 for a starting bid is a bit ambitious for an engine sitting around for decades. Regardless of what was done way back when it would be unwise to run it without at least tearing it down to see how the internals have endured the years.

BTW I guess my engine was a crate engine once upon a time. As I posted some time aga, it sports a tag from Pueblo base machine shop.

Micah I commented on that video about 2 years ago. My comment is the last one on the list.

The Crate was a Crate engine crate at one time. My point it the engine in it is not an MB engine. Unless the head was swapped. With a CJ2A head which I seriously doubt the military would have done.

The majority of Jeeps in Korea were G503s and repair parts were needed, so the Government purchased two batches of new complete replacement engines for them. The engines were the current design with a few changes so they would bolt right in to a G503. These 1950s replacement engines had 1MB serial number prefixes like this eBay engine. Looks like it was probably installed in a Jeep, rode hard, and then removed and rebuilt to serve another day.

I love this place Tongue...always something new to learn, always someone there to share it (Thanks, Bob!)

I saw that "1MB" and was instantly suspicious.  So much better knowing the backstory Thumbs Up

Bob any idea why the serial number would be so low showing only 5 digits ?

I'm away from home for a long weekend so I can't check my references until Tuesday to look into that serial number further.
