Just ordered a new plate from Robert. Sent him the set. numbers and a pic of the original. he advise he could not put a date on the trailer based on the set. no. but did state it was the second style used. Don't know when they changed style of the plate? That would help narrow down the production dates by set. no., at least get a little closer.

Bensh,

The changes in the data plates seem to match what you've been told.  Using Art's website for info, it seems the early plates were only used as the military plates were used up.  The latest brass versions that Art has posted don't seem to occur until after your trailer (25XXX vs. 30XXX).   I’ve not heard of anything more precise than year of manufacture unless the owner had the original paperwork identifying day/month.

With little information available, Art's trailer page is the best on accumulated data and is very helpful with identifying your trailer.

Based on the serial number alone, it appears you're close to 1948.   I seem to recall that manufacture dates could have also been slipped to a later year if that's when the trailer was actually sold.  So, it seems logical and relatively safe if you went with '48.

Well said Rus...thanks

I really need more people to contact with me that still have original titles or Bill Of Sales to pin point the dates of manufacture.

I took a started database on a Yahoo Groups Forum and added to it ten fold. There has never been any official documentation on production figures and this was all we had to start with. By studying the pictures for detail changes and documenting that with the serial numbers is how I have gotten this far.

Rus & Art, appreciate the info and all the work. It is quite interesting to see how the detective work progresses and the little bits that help, like subtle changes in body, tailgates and lights, ID plates and such. It sure would be nice to have the original paperwork, but I bet that doesn't happen to often.

The PO is going to send me a bill of sale so I can apply for an Indiana lost title then I will be able to get tags for road use. As I get more detailed pics I'll be sure to send to you. I was just glad to be able to bring up the serial number on the original data plate - and be able to order an authentic new one.
