X2 on that, Ron!

Also, keep an eye on those axle wedges.  They look like aluminum, perhaps zinc or other light metal alloy.  I went thru two sets of them before I decided just to make them out of steel.  Haven’t had any problem since making my own.  Did you extend the head of your leaf center pin to fit thru the wedge and fully into the axle tube perch?

They are aluminum,  and are temporary.  I just don't like that extra point of failure.    I think once these springs settle in,  I am going to (one more time) cut off the perches and weld back where they need to be.

Yes,  the center bolt has extension up into the axle pad hole . . . so ok there. Smile

Great job Ron! Looks like it was just stamped out of one piece of sheet metal! I finally received all the suspension parts for Grasshopper.  Trying to find the time to put it together.

Thanks guys!   Glad this is close to being done (other than shifter boots).

I thought I would be able to make some progress on other areas today,  but you know how it goes ->  "Life" gets in the way of Jeeps. haha   . .    This is a great thing though.   Today our 4th grandchild was born! Smile  Our first grandson.    Interestingly,  of my parents 11th great grandchildren,  he will be the first one to carry on our last name. Shocked

With this early birth,  my son asked if I could help with some tasks that he was planning to do,  but will need to spend time at home.    Of course I will help him out.

Wilson . .  you are just going to have to wait.  haha

I forgot to mention in last post . .  we need to plan some Jeeping together.  LOL    Unfortunately,  my weekends are booked thru Labor Day.    Maybe after that.  (so summer will be over Ouch  )

Wilson was borrowing a rear diff cover from another project.   While placing order for other stuff,  I noticed what seemed to be a good cover for Wilson's Dana 44.   I like it for a couple reasons:

1) it is thicker than stock . .  1/8" . . that should hold up better to rock bashes . .  maybe not as bullet-proof as some after-market ones,  but still looks somewhat stock.  (it is oem spicer/dana)

2) the filler hole is higher.   This might help provide better oil delivery to the pinion bearings that are now pivoted higher than stock.

I decided a couple weeks ago to revert back to original clutch linkage, and ordered a replacement "pivot stud".  (The 70+ year-old original broke in Southington event)

Today I removed the Advanced Adapters chain unit,  and installed the "original" bell-crank system, using this new "pivot stud"  . . .

Long story,  but this works better on Wilson.    Maybe someday I will try the chain again,  but right now I am liking the original setup better.

Sometimes it's not necessary to "reinvent the wheel".  Hopfully you didn't have to cut too much stuff off to revert back to original.

I am really scrambling now to be ready for the Flatfender Gathering on Aug. 30.  Wheels and tires and springs - Oh My!

I removed the chain and sprocket etc.    The bracket is still on the Jeep.  It did not interfere with the stock setup,  so I left it on.     All I had to do was bolt the original stuff back in  (with a new pivot stud).     I am thinking of carrying the chain and sprocket when going out in boonies,  as a spare if anything happened to original linkage. Smile

Performed some minor updates this week.      Replaced the winch controller with new one,  and replaced the old steel winch line with synthetic.

30 years ago I won a Ramsey REP6000 winch at Murphy Jeep Jamboree,  as door prize.   It is slow,  but has gotten me out of some jambs,  and has done a lot of firewood work.    I never liked the controller,  especially on long pulls,  or respooling.   My thumb would be sore from pushing the button so hard.  A few years ago,  I ran-over the cable,  it pulled and broke the connector at the solenoid box.
I decided rather than replace or try to fix it,   I would get a fancy new wireless controller.   It has been ok,  and nice to be able to control from longer distance when cutting down a tree etc,   but it is a little flaky sometimes,  and because of that, always concerns me when out in boonies that it might let me down.

I have always liked the controller on my son's Warn 8274 better,   so got one of those,  and the Warn wiring harness connector for it.  Seemed like high price for what it is,  but works good.

The old steel winch rope had quite a few of those broken wires that can slice hand if not careful,  so also finally decided to switch to synthetic.  A black friday sale also helped knock me off the fence.

In a quick pull test,  I realize that I need to spool the synthetic cable on tighter.   I spooled it on holding as tight as possible by hand,  (like I used to do with steel cable),  but when under high load,  the outside wrap buried itself deep into the inner wraps.

I considered maybe getting a new winch,   but decided to risk spending $200 on this 30-year old one,  and hope it keeps on ticking. LOL

Glad you got the controller the way you want it.  I imagine you will like the synthetic cable - that seems to be what everyone is going to.  I bought the Badlands Apex winch from Harbor Freight and it came with synthetic cable.  Haven't installed it on Grasshopper yet so I can't offer any opinion.  Thankfully synthetic  held OK when jpet winched us up at Southington!

I think you'll really the synthetic line.  It would be a really good idea to spool the line under a pretty fair load - especially the first couple of courses.  I hook to the telephone pole at the end of my driveway and pull it uphill.  Couple clicks on the E-brake works too.  You just can't get enough resistance by hand for those first rows.
