I began installing the Brennans Garage disc brake brackets that came with my '48 2A. I finished up the drivers side this past weekend. It is an easy installation for the front axle, I bought the calipers, rotors, wheel bearings, seals from rock auto. Already had a pair of used hubs so I removed the lug studs and installed Dorman p/n 610-034 studs for more length to cover the added rotor width. Suggestion when ordering the calipers is to order the one that comes with the banjo bolt for the brake hose, my R/H side came with the bolt, the L/H did not (different suppliers due to one being out of stock). Anyway I also bought a Spicer axle for the right side to upgrade that side due to having a Bendix axle being installed. It is supposed to be here today.
Can't wait for a test drive. See Brennan's Garage website for tech info end of pics

Nice work!
Brake hose questions: Where did you get the brake hoses? What are the lengths? Are the hose Metric to Standard? |

they are S-10 front disc hoses so no metric brakeline connections. the only other thing I may have to change is the axle attach point for the brake line, tweak it so it comes off inline with the axle.

I just finished mine too. the Brake hoses were kinda tight bending back to the rear of the front axle so i swapped my right side to the left so my hoses are in front of the axle now. it seems to not bind so much for me. I'm now using the dual master kit from herms to complete the whole setup. Disks on rear too.

Looking great! I'm using Brennan's disc brake system on me front & rear diff's. In the front, I am running D30 disc brake spindles, hubs, and bearings from a 1978 CJ5. I chose to use Dorman 610-519.1 wheel lug studs. The knurl is 4 thousandths larger then stock BUT goes in easily even when using my worn out electric 3/8 impact wrench. I like the step and extra length these studs provide.
The rear 44 diff will have disc brakes with electric E-brakes.

Hey guys! Those are great pix of the disc install. Was there a need for a spacer on the front? It looks like the caliper is potentially touching wheel? Not to hijack, but here goes: If you go disc front/ drum rear, isn't there a residual pressure valve on the stock master cylinder which could mess with the front disks? 10 PSI for the drum rear is fine. I need 2 PSI for the front. Where is the residual pressure valve? Is that part of the stuff attached to the front end of the MC? I assume that I will need a proportioning valve and some way to differentiate the pressure?

You do need a proportioning valve. My CJ3A has discs on the front with an original master cylinder but Bubba cut and and folded over the metal brake lines to the rear drums. I need new drums in the back so I am thinking disc conversion with the appropriate master cylinder for mine. It’s overkill but as long as I am replacing parts anyway I might as well do it.

On the first disc conversion I did (Sidekick brakes all4), we left the stock master cylinder in place with no modifications for most of a year, and it worked fine. When I installed a Wilwood double master I removed the residual valves, as Wilwood instructs. The residual pressure check valve is inside the stock master cylinder. When re-assembling the master, it’s the first part put in. You only need the 2-lb valve if your master cylinder is lower than the calipers. The Wilwood uses remote-mounted reservoirs high on the firewall, so the valve is not needed.

When you do the rear axle do not drill out the lug bolt holes in the rotor, unless they won't fit your lug bolts. stock holes worked fine for the lug bolts I used. easy mod for better brakes.
Don't forget to drill the lower grease relief hole in the bracket before installing it. you can use the rear axle bearing retainer for a template to locate that hole. Edited by jeeper50 - 28 June 2022 at 5:59am |

I'm going with a new stock MC (stockpilng parts now for a front only swap)....so are you saying you DID NOT remove parts from your master cylinder? (I understand why you do for four wheel disc swap...was just wondering what you did on your disc/drum) |

I put the tracker disc conversion on all four wheels on Shiney using the stock master cylinder with no proportioning valve. It’s been on the road for 3 years now with zero problems. At some point my intention is to use a Wilwood dual master with remote resevoirs, but that likely won’t happen until I have some compelling reason to go back into the brakes.

Actually all of the ones I put the disc brake conversion on I used new MC on them right out of the box, for me when I do the brakes I just put all new brake components on. Its easier that way and I don't have to worry about the brakes(I have enough to worry about with the restorations). 😉

Thanks, I was just wondering if the disc/drum combo worked OK without taking the residual valve out. You mentioned no proportioning valve which is a different thing that controls front to rear bias. I know in most cases the discs seem to override the drums enough that proportioning valve isn't usually needed. ( as in my setup I have on 'Frankie')
That's good to know.....just wanted to make sure we were on the same page with the residual valve. Thank you. |
