Not that important,  but I went on a short quest to see what this tool is called.   Looking up "tongs" usually results in something more resembling a giant pair of scissors,  with hooks instead of sharp cutting blades.

I could find no modern replacement for this:

I got a wood chipper last year to help with clearing trails on my son's land.

In Phase I,  the chips would go on the ground from the short discharge chute,  to be shoveled up later into bantam trailer.
Phase II . . if the situation permitted,  I could shoot the chips into the back of trailer, with the tailgate down,  if I parked it at 90deg to chipper  . . .  but because of short discharge chute  -> I had to manually keep moving chips to front of trailer.
Phase III . . I decided to splurge and get the extended chute option.  . .   Then added pintle hook to back of trailer.  Now I can take this "chipper train" up the trails,  and easily collect chips as I go.

.

This is still totally in prototype stage . . I have several changes to make.   1) replace the plywood tongue on the chipper with steel,   2) some kind of "backstop/frontstop" to keep dust out of Wilson.    Even though 99% of the chips end up in trailer,  a lot of dust still makes it way forward.  3) wider axle and bigger wheels on chipper  (it was too tippy on the trails as is)

Jeep fever I see on your trailer you have a willys tailgate was it difficult to fit it? Did you use the willys tailgate brackets? Nice set up by the way!

Someone did notice.   LOL   I thought maybe I should mention in original post that the rearend of this trailer was highly modified.     It was a basket case when I bought it,   did not have tailgate etc.

The rear frame crossmember is thicker than stock,  and I simply bolted the Willys brackets to it.    I don't recall modifying the width of tailgate.    I need to go back to build thread to refresh my memory. Embarrassed

Edit:  I found the old build thread,  but does not have any detail on installing tailgate.   I need to go back and update that thread,   I have done a little more work to it since then.

The link, to build thread,  if interested

Well you did a great job! It looks like all you did was hang a tailgate on it. Well done!

Next phase in the prototype.   I removed the newly-added bolt-on pintle hook from back of green Bantam,  and instead welded in a 2" receiver tube,  (so that I could use a variety of trailer ball mounts).    A flush tube is also better -> when not pulling a 2nd implement,  the rear of trailer is flat, . . . no tailgate interference when opened completely down.

With a regular ball-> I could hook up my 2nd trailer.

It weaved thru the woods fairly well,  even at this fairly tight spot on the trail -> the rear trailer tracked closely to same path as middle trailer.   (photos above and below)

Starting to load up some storm damaged wood.  I put some wide tires on 2nd trailer for now . . a little more flotation in the kinda wet conditions.

Only half as many trips to the woods. Big smile

A jeep train, I love it.   Now you can hook the log spliter to the second trailer and the wood chopper to it. Thumbs Up
