Geez...and the rear right angle drum gear at the back, steps(?), and at least one wheel ring... I'll bet that rusted hulk has a twin stick in it to boot, lol (guessing) LOL

Geoff,
The poachers that I know in the northeast would ask no less than $3500 for that winch alone and I believe there is a gent in Kentucky that might even go 5-6K & would keep the engine pulley for a later date!
Lets just hope this rare historical component finds a deserving home!

My gosh, that’s alot of money!! im sure most you guys have been into these old Willys for a long time (way before me) and can remember picking them up for almost nothing.... I hope they don’t become so far out of reach only professionals can afford them.... that was a good deal hope it goes to a good home too.

Unfortunately "poaching for the Ivory" is exactly what is happening to our early JEEP hobby as of late. Folks that were once enthusiasts have been prostituted into capitalizing on the fact that the boyz with the big bucks with their Corvette,Ferrari, Packard, Duesenberg, Muscle Car & now JEEP collections domestically and abroad, are thinking that early WILLYS JEEPS are now "cute" & must be included in their collection, which drives up the prices for the rest of us. They have no real passion for the old JEEP hobby and only see them as an investment. Prices on rare components that were once almost affordable for the real enthusiast have gone through the roof in recent years. I used to pass along these items at very fair prices to help out our fellow enthusiasts. I still do with my circle of buds, however "Mom didn't raise a fool" & in order to fund my hobby interests I too have inflated some prices due to the recent explosion. If I feel the buyer is one of "the boyz" or is someone that is just going to "flip it only for a profit"i will jack up the $. I am all about making a buck or getting a deal but it seems to be getting kind of ugly recently. Our young start up hobbyists can rarely afford this madness & they can be easily discouraged from participating in this hobby at all. In the long run we all suffer because of it. When all the old hogs have made their bucks & died off no one will be left to carry on in preserving this bit of automotive history & that is very sad! IMHO.

I'm just saying!

I think the fascinating part is that often enough the pieces that were less desirable in the day end up in fewer numbers overall, resulting in fewer surviving pieces years later resulting in higher desirability overall...

"ivory"... gold is shiny, i'll take steel for durability at a fair price-

ETA... the entirety of the bloodline is based on folks buying war surplus used, maybe buying the new and improved new and keeping it running using parts of leather belts as engine bearings... utility.  It was never about chrome, or more.  Let the rich pricks fight over that which capitalism,in her infinite wisdom, discarded...  if capstans were profitable theyd've made them 50 years

The capstan is neat... the 90 degree pto gear cool.... I'm good Wink

I agree. Rare items have blasted up in price. Especially WWII parts.
However in the Midwest, common CJ2As and their common parts have dropped in value. Unless it's a restored Jeep, prices are nearly half of what they were 3 years ago. That's just my person observation.

Here in the northeast the last 3 years has seen folks asking $1500 for a $500 rusted parts jeep, and $3-400 for black hole L head cores... I swear, with all the "barn finds" running around, every barn in new england must have six jeeps in it LOL

Did anyone else notice that in the early '80s when Jeep was making the Scrambler, they almost couldn't give them away.  They only made (I believe) less than 30,000 of them.  Ten years later, Scramblers suddenly became highly desirable and were selling for huge money.  Where were those buyers when Jeep was making the Scrambler?  This is what happens with all fads.
There's a reason it's called Ol' Unreliable
