Although we haven’t posted an update, we have made some good progress on Elmo over the summer. We will break the update down into several posts to make it easier to follow along. The first thing we built was the Dana 20 twin stick linkage. We used two 3/8” hiem joints, some bronze sleeves, and a variety of steel. We incorporated an adjustable interlock into it to prevent one of the shifters from being in low range and the other in high range simultaneously. We finished it off with a JB Custom Fabrication boot and some aluminum knobs that we machined.

The next project was the accessory drives. A bracket built out of 3/16” plate holds a saginaw power steering pump. We used the factory alternator mount but cut a new arm out of 1/4” plate. Next we bent a crossover bar out of 1.5” D.O.M. tubing. It bolts to the front shock towers and has a mount that comes off the front of it to hold the radiator and fan. This and a mount to hold the radiator overflow tank completed the under hood fabrication.

That brace that ties the cross over to the radiator mount would be the perfect place to put the name of your jeep. |

We then bolted the rear axle in place to set the pinion angle. The axle was bolted to the leaf springs using a U-bolt design we are experimenting with. We used 1/2” countersunk bolts that recess into the U-bolt plates leaving the bottom completely flush. These bolts thread into the “U-bolts,” which are pieces 3/4” shaft that we drilled, tapped, and had bent to match the diameter of the axle tubes. With the pinion angle set and the spring perches tacked on, we unbolted the rear axle and took the rest of Elmo apart. Next, we sleeved the B-pillar roll cage mounts for the rear shocks and did some final welding before the frame, roll cage, skid plate, and gas tank were cleaned and coated in epoxy primer. We then welded some shock tabs and caliper mounts on the rear axle. The calipers, which are off of a Ford Fusion, have electric parking brakes which we plan to wire individually to use as cutting brakes. Once the welding was completed on both axle housings, we took them to be set up with 4.56 gears and air lockers. |

While the axles were being set up, we took the transfer case apart, replaced the seals and gaskets, and put it back together. Once the axles were back, we painted them, the transfer case, and several other parts with the epoxy primer. We then bolted the everything to the frame, including the transmission, which we also had rebuilt. |

Finally, we did some work on the tub. With a lot of metal shrinking and a lot of hammer and dolly work, we were able to get the panels fairly straight. We then sandblasted and primed it in epoxy primer, along with the grill and tailgate. Since then we have started some bondo work and completing it will be out next project. Another thing worth mentioning is that we picked up a Dauntless from Oldpappy at the Willys Reunion. All the machine work has been done and it only needs a few parts before being assembled, which we will do after the bodywork is complete. -Dylan |

Get Elmo together and come out to the Winter 4x4 Jamboree at Sand Hollow in January. We'll have a flat fender festival.

Wow! I remember looking through this thread a good while back, and was very impressed with the work you had done on it. Even more so since seeing the latest progress.
I didn't realize this was the Jeep that Dauntless is going into, and am happy I sold it to someone who does this level of work. Hope to see that Jeep once it is completed.

If you can't get there in a Jeep you don't need to be there!

We’ve spent most of the past couple months doing body work and getting Elmo ready for paint. Then a couple weeks ago, we got it painted. The paint we chose is Hot Rod Flatz Sublime Green. While we let the paint cure, we ran some of the brake, fuel, and air locker lines before setting the tub and roll cage back on the frame. We have a rebuild kit on the way for the engine, which we hope to start on soon. -Dylan

Nice project, Elmo is going to be a blast to wheel when done. I have a mandrel bent 2x4 frame under my WILLYS. It came from Throttle Down Kustoms in Moore Montana, owner is Jeremy Pulse. You can by just frame rails or an entire frame. Look forward to seeing your progress. James
