A jeep buddy gave me an original exhaust manifold to replace the damaged one on my jeep. The heat riser shaft was frozen and the exhaust pipe bolt and stud nut looked challenging. But a couple days if soaking with penetrating oil, then gentle tapping on the shaft got it loosened up. After bead blasting and a little love, it rotates easily. I only had to make a new key to align the arm to the shaft properly.
To my surprise, the exhaust pipe bolt/nut and stud nut came off pretty easily. The stud nut was brass, which really helped. After it was all cleaned up, it was coated with Eastwood's cast iron exhaust coating. I've had good luck with it before. It we I'll go on the shelf until I'm ready to change it out. |

You might want to use a straight edge to check the face of the manifold for warping, also check the intake manifold.

Good point. I did and it is nice and straight. I'll check the intake when I remove it to do the swap.

Thanks for the pictures. I'm getting ready to do this to mine as well. I'm hopeful I can free up the heat riser as well.

I found that glass beading around the shaft/flap on the inside helped by removing the carbon buildup. That was causing some binding as well. Good luck.

I am wanting to separate a manifold set.
Did you apply heat before attempting to remove the 4-attachment bolts ? (the one's holding the intake to exhaust). Any recommended method for removing the bolts without breaking them ? Len |

I haven't got that far yet. But I would expect that heating the intake around the bolts with a torch would be beneficial. So would a couple days application of penetrating oil. I'd be glad to hear other's experience do it.
