You know how it goes, you get one done and then another comes along.
A member offered me the remains of what I think is a very early 3a, it came off his trailer looking much like this but missing the windshield, hood,a fender and some other things. I started taking it apart to part it out, but then I started to look and think I may be able to build something from it since it has such a nice frame and maybe the engine will run. I have been toying with idea of putting one together with all the spare parts I have for a while now. |

After pulling everything off except the drivetrain, and working on the engine I found a piston stuck and broke and a bunch of stuck valves. Also the transmission was completely trashed from rust and its missing a mess of teeth. But I still got a nice frame.and I managed to find a old set of ford rims to roll it around on.

48Willy,
Nice save! You need to start a build thread so we can watch your progress. Might take more than a battery, carb and some gas to see if that engine will run. You might remove the manifolds - it looks like the mouse may have inadvertently gotten some acorns in the intake. Keep us posted. |

No Kidding!!! I did not know that? I'm sure there is some salvageable pieces left, you never know what you might need.

I got a good ways with it now , just playing catch-up with the build thread. This is after a used piston was swapped in, new piston rings, all the valves removed, cleaned, valve guides cleaned, allot of cleaning in the engine, water jacket pressure washed out , a distributor swapped in and everything bolted up to a better transmission. This is also the point I found out the early 2a starter I was going to use is fried beyond fixing. I didn't have another, but after searching though my parts I found a 12v cj5 starter, bell housing, and a power unit flywheel with the right ring gear. Everything came back apart and I swapped the ring gear to the cj flywheel, so I'm completely 12v now. After all that, I was rewarded with a sweet running l134 that is holding really good oil pressure and doesn't seem to smoke at all.

I couldn't help myself, I wanted to drive it around the yard. I had a body that I had got off a member years ago, so we set that on there and I straightened out some front sheet metal and bolted it on there. Also put a windshield frame on that I had saved at the scrap yard, but it's from a 3b, didn't notice that at the time but sort of makes it look better.
This is how it's sitting today, my plans are to weld some patches in, maybe put a roll bar in it, and I got a idea of putting a hydraulic Ramsey winch on it that would also give me the opportunity to add a 3 point lift on if I can |

Been tinkering a little with it, hopefully have the fuel system all together, cleaned the fuel pump and it seems to be working fine, found a few holes in the fuel tank so steam cleaned it and the air cleaner and patched the tank. Thought I would try to slow the rust and throw a coat of paint on the tank. Also got a little wiring done so it starts with a key switch. |

One more thing fixed, welded a few holes up in the air cleaner and put it together. Got a working air cleaner system on it now.

I'm going to use some 1"x 2" x1/8 tube for floor brace, I used it on the 2a and it worked very well. If you aren't doing a full restoration it's nice because you don't need reenforcement for the bolts and it's reasonable priced. Down side is it's just a little taller than the original hat channel and you need to compensate for it.

The Farmall muffler is back from the junk pile , it won't work with a PTO of course but it served me well for years on the other jeep and it does the job.Added an new alternator and wired it up, now I have it where I can take it for a little wheeling around the farm .Next on the list is some brakes.
