here’s where it was rubbing. Question is why was it rubbing?
Is there supposed to be a dimple on the cover there? |

I'm pretty sure you know that dimple doesn't belong there.
That said, before you button it up, don't forget the small cork gasket that fits behind the oil slinger.

I only read a little, but it was said the cork “maybe” only needed for chain drive?

Hmmm. I haven't read that. Not sure why it would make a difference. In my humble opinion, it's not really a seal, as it's being drenched in oil on both style engines. I think it was to stop the slinger from rattling around and may stop some oil from sneaking down the crank shaft toward the pulley.

I can’t find the part anyway, so fingers crossed that I don’t really need it. 🤷♂️

Quite honestly, the only reason I know about it is it's included in the Felpro full engine gasket and seal kit. When I first put one of these back together, I was terrified of leaving something off that should be on.

crankshaft seal in the timing cover is being a nuisance. OD is just a hair too big.
What gives?!? Wrong seal? Poorly made? Tricks?

never mind. Left the cover in the sun, put the seal in the freezer.
Lightly sanded around the seal, light oil, and a good angry wack. Got it started. Sealed up the timing cover. Trying a dry cork seal for the first time. 🤞 |

The chain-drive crank sprocket is oiled by a passage in the crank to the inside of the sprocket and a groove around the crank to deliver the oil to a hole in the sprocket that will deliver oil to the chain. I think the cork seal is to keep oil from leaking out the front of the sprocket and thru the spacer to the slinger and pulley. The slinger is smashed between the pulley and the spacer and shouldn't rattle. The gear-drive crank does not have that oil passage. If you have a cork seal and put it in on a gear-drive engine, if it's not needed I don't think it will hurt anything. If you don't have one, don't worry about it. If you don't have one and want one, I could send you one. I have several, because I don't put them in on gear-drive engines. BW

BINGO Flatfender!
We’ve got spark! Now if the fuel pump wouldn’t lose prime every time it sits for a while.
