I am thinking of going back to a foot start switch in my Jeep. I am wondering what those hear on the forum think of them? Are they annoying and should I stick with my current set up or is it worth the trade.

It’s unique, it’s what a Willy’s Jeep came with. It is no more a problem than you let it be. I personally enjoy turning the key to the ON position and then pressing the starter button. When people not familiar with jeeps see this they are amazed that I started it this way. It’s almost as good as a stick shift for a “millennial anti-theft device”. My vote? Hell yes!

Just my opinion - But I really like dash push button for the starter on our trail Jeep (12 volts). I have a floor starter on the restored Jeep (6 volts).
Sometimes offroad I will want to give it some gas or do some other fancy start technique (hold the accelerator down while cranking (because someone flooded it)). The dash starter switch comes in handy for that. |

I agree with damar2yxr - I like the foot switch. If you take that route then my only recommendation is to bite the bullet and get a high quality but spendy one from DeBella or Fitzpatrick. The cheaper ones found at NAPA or Tractor Supply don't hold up very well in my experience. The high quality switches use a lot of copper for the contacts like the old ones did.
Stev is right though - the key/dash switch is easier on the trail, particularly for jeeps with inoperative parking brakes like mine.

I think a foot starter switch is a cool vintage feature if you are only going to drive your rig on and off the trailer at shows, or down tbe street to the Dairy Queen. If you are ever going to use it on any challenting terrain, trying to manage 3 pedals and a button with two feet while hanging on a rock face a few inches from doom will convince you that one less gadget for your feet to manage is the better choice.
If i had a foot starter i would have rolled off of this edge several different times. As always, your milage may vary. |

Full disclosure: a few years ago when my parking brake grenaded, I pulled all the broken bits off and never replaced them . I never catch that backing plat on rocks any more cuz it’s not there. I just use the key switch as a parking brake now.

All good advise, I have jeeps both ways. The only advantage of a foot starter is the COOL factor. I would not change one still set up with the foot starter but I have not opted to change one back either. As Stan has pointed out there are times that the foot starter is hard to manage.
Just my 2 cents worth. Mike |

After the seller dropped my Jeep off and departed, it took me half an hour to figure out how to start it. I had no idea about the foot switch. I love that switch. I wouldn't replace it.

I've had various vehicles with foot starters interestingly enough Chug was not one of them Dad swapped to a push button long before I ever drove Chug in 72-73 (around the yard) I will be using the same. It was hard to find a On-Off-On ignition switch with no start position so I bought two of them when I did. And I agree with Stan I have even added a hand throttle to my shift knob because of the need to do more then 3 things with the pedals at once.

It's like the "Millennial anti-theft device"-- a manual transmission. Extra security.

hi. hello.
i install the foot switch connected to the starter solenoid at the same time of the key switch, so i keep the cool factor of the foot and use the key any time that want!! almost all the time i use foot start. |

My brother tried to get to me by having me drive his M38 to the barn. I have driven a lot of old trucks. I knew where the starter button was. Better luck next time Bill.

Drive up in a '56 Chevy sedan and ask him to put gas in the tank.

I’ve got both the key starter and foot starter. Just wired them parallel. I definitely wanted the cool factor foot starter, but the “anti-doom” convenience of the key starter has saved my bacon more times than I can count.
