Thanks for posting this Brian. It was a great year of jeeping and more importantly of friendship.

Life IS good!

I went out for a walk this morning in our neighborhood with my beautiful wife and this was our view.

I tried to capture the scope of these mountains we live next to with this panorama pic. Doesn’t really scratch the surface.

As you say Stan,  photos can never convey reality,  but I think that first pic is very impressive (and beautiful)

My Dad (born in Durango CO) used to say that the "mountains" in the east were barely hills.   Your photo is evidence of that. . .    The Appalachian "mountains" can be seen from our house, (Skyline Drive)  . .  and although also beautiful,  they pale in scale to your photo.

Seems so strange to see snow. LOL    Some others have mentioned watching snow melt recently.   It has been a mild Winter here in VA.   I miss having some snow.

Our mountains just got two feet of snow last week.
The peak in the first picture is called Ben Lomond. Just to the left of it is a peak that you can’t really see due to the camera angle called Willard Peak. There is a fairly decent forest road that you can drive up to Willard Peak in the summer.
As a kid my friend’s older brother belonged to a group of hang glider flyers. It was the early days of hang gliding. The didn’t have harnesses or any kinds of safety straps, just a swing seat that they sat on while they hung on to the cross bar.
They hired a few of us to carry their kites from Willard Peak over to Ben Lomond peak where they set up and jumped off. Pretty wild stuff.

How far are you from the peak of those mountains, and what is elevation?

This is photo of our mountains,  taken about 1/4 mile from our house.   We are about 25 miles from peak, and they are 3500-3800ft.

Well, the trail is up the back side. About 20 miles from my house to the trail head, then 13 miles on the dirt to the peak at about 9760 ft.  My house is at about 4250 ft.
As the crow flies, that peak in the first picture is about 7 miles from my house.

Here’s a picture I took from the top last year. My house is about dead center in this picture.

This weekend, I did some camping a wheeling with the grand kiddies out on the north 40:

We got some really good wheeling in:

There is a creek that zigzags through the property all the way from north to south. Terry decided to clear all the obstructions so that we could drive it end to end:

... basically I dropped in with BAM BAM and drove the creek bed till I came to an impass and the Terry cleared it. He only removed things that made it impossible to get through. It’s still plenty challenging to go from end to end but at least it is now doable. There are several hairpin turns in the creek where one side is stable but the other side is like quick sand!

Terry says, “you don’t need a Warn winch when you have a John Deere”
