I do not think that the information is clear on exactly what was standard and what was an option and when. I believe that the following is correct:
Until serial number 45723, there was only a driver's side taillight with a reflector on the passenger side. At that point the bezels were changed from black to chrome and the passenger side taillight could ordered as an option in place of the reflector. http://www.thecj2apage.com/forums/turn-signal-lights_topic4192_post29695.html#29695 It isn't clear to me if the second taillight ever became standard equipment on the 2A. So any 2A with a serial number of 45723 (mid '46 or so) or later could have come from the factory with a second taillight. Even without the taillight or reflector surviving, you might be able to deduce from the holes on the passenger side whether or not a reflector or taillight was originally on any particular 2A. The holes for attaching the reflector where at a 45 degree angle with the top hole to the right of the body seam and the bottom hole to the left of the seam. The passenger side taillight holes were vertical on the left side of the seam. Edited by samcj2a - 30 Oct. 2009 at 2:28pm |

A 48 CJ-2A should have a NACO or ALA Tail Lamp on the left (driverside) depending upon the serial number and a CM Hall reflector on the other side.

I think the ALA taillight was never factory installed on CJ-2As and entered production at CJ-3A
53768.

Bob,
Were there two taillights on 3As or was the second an option as on the 2A? |

CJ-3As began with one NACO taillight (with horizontal studs) on the left and one reflector on the right rear. At some point early on the reflector became an accessory and was no longer factory installed. In 1950 a single ALA taillight replaced the NACO in production. Dual taillights and turns signals were optional accessories.

Morning Sam,
I had ordered a Reflector from Walck's & they sent me 1 which has 6 diagonal lines on the Disc. Then UBS told me that the original has just 1 vertical line showing the RED DISC in 2 halves. Since I am in India it is difficult to parcel to & fro. So I shall not be picky & just connect this reflector on.Do you agree?? Where/whom to buy the tail lights from, do advise. Tani,
You cannot buy replacement NACO taillights that are correct. The replacements available have horizontal mounting studs instead of the vertical mounting studs. NOS taillight lenses show up once in awhile on eBay. There are two different reflectors that were used on the 2A. The early ones had a black Cocoran Brown bezel and a Grotelite No. 100 red lens. Those lenses show up on eBay from time to time. I was lucky and found a NOS Grotelite No. 100 lens. The reflector used on later 2As was a chrome plated bezel marked C.M. Hall. It had a red Stimsonite No. 12 lens. These parts also show up on eBay from time to time. I do not know of any correct reproductions. Here's what the early reflector looked like - no lines: And, here is a shot of the later CM Hall reflector - one line, though if correctly mounted, it would be at 45 degrees and not vertical: This Hall reflector and lens is the same as Art posted, above. As for what I would do if I did not have easy access to correct lenses, I believe that I would make do with lenses that looked as close to the originals as I could find until I could find correct lenses that I was willing to buy. Here is a link to an excellent post by Sean with links to photos of both styles (black bezel and chrome bezel) NACO standard taillights as well as the slightly incorrect reproductions that are available. http://www.thecj2apage.com/forums/46-tail-lights-one-only_topic7916_post65593.html#65593 Edited by samcj2a - 31 Oct. 2009 at 4:26am |

Here is some great evidence, provided by lowenuf, that the dual taillights were available as a production option in place of the chrome reflector - a copy of the bill of materials entry for that option.
Thanks, low! |

I believe that it is caused by the Firefox plugin called "Browser Highlighter"
if you have this installed it will insert this code into your wysiwyg
editors. To check open firefox click tools, add ons, and look for "Browser Highlighter" if it is installed uninstall it or disable it.
