The type A is full width of the tailgate and has the hinge pins, the B fits between the hinge pin windows.

I have not seen too many photos of the longer Type A repair, so I'm sharing my experience if it helps.

As mentioned before, Mike in Oregon's repair part is great and very nice to work with.  My tailgate wasn't terrible, but also not great.  One of the hinge pins was rusted to nearly round, so I went with the longer repair piece.

I measured the cut line and used an angle grinder for the long straight and a smaller die-grinder for the corners.  I left a sliver of the old metal on one side to help align the new piece and removed a corresponding amount on the new part.  This was probably unnecessary, but it made me feel confident about the height of the new piece from top to bottom as well as the alignment radially around the hinge. I tack-stitched the inside face, flipped the tailgage and just did cosmetic tacks on the outside to get everything smooth.  Please don't judge my welding too harshly, I'm still learning.

A finger sander was helpful on grinding down the weld on the outside face. A regular 4" grinder worked fine for the inner face.
