OK sam, it worked and I thank you. My experience: I read thru the thread and jpet had the same info as you in your last post. I did not put in the _ between opt and opt and when I rechecked the typing, there were % where I left blank spaces. So, I manually changed % to _ and it did not work. I rechecked the typing and it changed the _ to %. I reread the thread and discovered your last post and did a copy and paste and it worked. A question: Is there something I am not doing correctly?
Anyway, THANKS....and now I can ride off into the sunset |

I'm not entirely sure, but it appears to me that there are no spaces in the URL of your avatar image. I'm pretty sure that the characters between the opt and opt is an underscore "_" . I guess that I am questioning the order of events that you described. Another thing that could have deceived you is if there were one or more incorrect characters in the URL after you edited it. It's tough to say. The good news is that you got it working. Sometimes it's just not worth it to figure out why!

sam, I have rechecked and have discovered there were _ between opt and opt. I had scrolled the line item to bottom of the viewing window and they were outta sight.

Ahhhhhh....................Sam.................ONE [singular] MYSTERIES [plural] ? Didn't anyone ever talk to you about plural/singlular agreement in English, or do we have to argue about which word is the key to parsing this statement? Is "one" or "fewer" the modifier of "mysteries"and then argue whether "fewer" in this statement is a noun or an adjective, or what part of speech "one" is, for that matter. The key question seems to be, how can we have ONE FEWER MYSTERIES? Once we agree on that, then we need our grammar to express the notion correctly.
NOTE: I just had to remind us all there are other arcane fields of information out there, and by so doing, ambivalentlyand with underconfidence, rest my case.
Truth be told, I'm wholly impressed by your and JPet's knowledge of and capability to communicate this stuff. I'm too impatient to sort it all out, having very little time left to try new things,which exacerbates my experiencing the opposite corollary, which is having my time entirely, and sometimes overly, occupied with managing old familiar ones.
you guys do good work.

Well, leave it to the English professor to come along and keep us on our toes! I'd argue that "one" modifies "fewer" and the "fewer" modifies "mysteries."
I give up. I actually changed it to read as Del suggested. Then, applying the untaught rule that "it just doesn't sound correct to me" when I read it after making the change, I changed it again to how it was. Yet another mystery of the English language among many mysteries! Edited by samcj2a - 12 Jan. 2011 at 10:35am |

Sam I agree with you on the "doesn't sound right" I think the problem may be with the word "fewer" Is it one of those words that cannot be intensified, like--WORSE? {worse is worse enough, and cant get any WORSER?] I thought of this when I kept stumbling over the solution. It sounds much better if we say, "ONE LESS MYSTERY" This way the grammar doesn't get words to stepping on each other's toes. Certainly "among many mysteries" trumps the game. It's smooth, a bit stuffy, and impeccible. [did I spell that rite}

This is fun, Del. I thought carefully about the use of "less" rather than "fewer" and applied the rule that fewer is to be used in such comparisons when one is referring to a specific number. It would be okay refer to "less mysterious'" though I believe that when numbers are intended, "fewer" is correct.
