Windshield stud location

Can anyone tell me where the studs for the original top go across the top of the windshield frame? The original holes have been filled and painted over so they need to be redrilled. How far in from each corner, and how far apart across the top.   If anyone has a diagram with measurements I would be really greatful. I'm doing a frame off resto of a '48 that has been in the family since '63. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here's what I measured off Lefty. First overall length 50 3/16.
 If you look through this thread the measurements are in a number of places http://www.thecj2apage.com/forums/bikini-tops-photos_topic8335_page3.html I cut and pasted one of the posts at the end. The measurements are probably also in the "Make your own canvas top" thread somewhere too.

Starting from the drivers side to centers:
 
1", 6 3/16, 11 1/4, 17 1/16, 22 7/16, 27 15/16, 33 3/8, 38 3/4, 44 3/16, 49 3/8
I thought they would be equal and at first glance thought they were . But they're not.
For one the drivers side is at 1" from the edge the pass side 3/4.

These are the correct dimensions:


Actual measurements on a windshield will vary due to weld tolerances and such but the general idea is that the pattern is centered on the windshield and they are all equally spaced 5-7/16" apart except for the third fastener from the end on the drivers side which is moved over 3/8" to clear the hood block as shown on the drawing.

Edit: Ooops.  And and each hole on the end is spaced 5 3/16" apart from the previous holeEmbarrassed

This tells me the tolerance isn't too critical. I drilled the holes for my studs using WFB's measurements (what I posted) and my New Life top fits fine. This was before Jeff's snazzy cad drawing was available. Wink (maybe it's the stretch built into the canvasLOL)

By my calculation, the hole spacings that you posted are within 1/16" of what I posted.  You have a 1" dimension from the edge of the windshield to the center of the first hole but that would not be noticed when installing the top.  The only thing that would be noticed is if the spacing between the holes was off.  1/16" is insignificant especially on a weldment such as this.

The ordinate dimensions in my previous drawing should be considered a reference only.  They are only correct if your windshield is indeed 49-5/32" from outside to outside.  The dimensions between holes are correct.  The true measurement should be from the center of the windshield out:

The distance from the first hole to the edge of the windshield is whatever it ends up to be.  Centering this pattern on the windshield is what is important.  This view is looking at the windshield like you would to drill the holes.

Hello bkreutz and all on this very informative discussion.
I too have a 1948 which I suppose is a lefty.by coincidence my vehicle under the data plates also shows black.but my numbers are higher on the list -209595.

Would like to see more details and help restoring my black lefty.
