Hey everyone.... I'm new here.  I just picked up a '47 CJ2A that had not moved since the mid-80's.  The spark plugs were pretty much rusted into place.  I did get three off, but one of them broke.  The steel nut is still there, but the core of the plug just shattered.  Any tips on how to remove it?

Not sure I understand the problem, I'm assuming what you're calling the "steel nut" is the body of the plug, if the center breaks out you should be able to still put a plug wrench on it. Soak it with PB Blaster (or similar, not WD40). If it broke off flush with the head with just the threaded portion still in the head, there are tools to remove it but I've found on an "L" head it's easier just to pull the head. Pictures might get you more specific recommendations (eliminates misunderstandings as related to terms used)Wink

Pull the head, turn it upside down and soak it from the bottom with PB Blaster.  You can then see the cylinders, valves and pistons and see what you really have to work with.  But if the plugs are that rusted the head studs and nut are too.  So, start soaking them and don't be in a hurry to get them off as one broken stud is a real chore.  Do a search and read the links that are posted.  Do not try to remove the studs without a stud puller socket.  Heat also helps and the last one i removed I had to use the candle against the red hot stud trick to free it up. (the wax runs down the threads in theory)

I thought I was the thrifty shopper when I found PB Blaster at the discount Big Lots Store.  Then I noticed that the although they same size cans as the auto parts store, they had several less ounces of product.  Not a bargain after all.

Thanks guys, I have already removed the head, and I did break one stud off in the block.  I tried to upload a picture of the broken plug, but it tells my the picture is too big.  Basically, the only thing left of the plug is the threaded part.  This isn't my first rodeo with Jeeps, but I have never dealt with anything this old! But trust me, I know PB Blaster is a Jeep's best friend.

all of the above methods should work....

what has worked for us, if you have access to the product, is to use a torch, with a rosebud head, and slowly apply heat around the base of the spark plug, and as it glows red, take a 1/2" drive socket with a breaker bar, and start removing....

good luck..
