Motivational photo... I don't have a good pic from yesterday, but here's one from a couple of weeks ago near Ouray, CO.   My friend Tom Jones in his 2a.  My left windshield hold-down latch in the foreground

Thanks Alan, that's a great motivational photo- I'll bet the Coast Range was awesome too!

My project is nowhere near a restoration- it's hardly stock, but some things really bug me if they don't look a certain way. For instance, the little dome-headed screws that attach the data plates to the dash and the firewall are getting me right now. Sure, I could use some bright, new screws from the hardware store, but I wouldn't be happy with that. Today I found three matching vintage screws for the ignition switch holes (with the slots put in the same orientation of course) so that made me happy.

For many other things I could care less about the bolts or fasteners; I'm sure there's a clinical explanation for this. Wink

Hey Otto, I’m assuming that stencil is the correct size right?  If so, could you please measure the width of the top line on both sides of the 4?  I need to do my tailgate in the next few days and since I have a vinyl cutter, I’ll just make my own stencil.  If I have that measurement I can scale it up from there.

Your tailgate looks great by the way!

Scratch,

I measured the stencil opening on both sides of the 4. To the left of the 4 it measures 0.120", to the right a little less- like 0.115".

This stencil came from one of the jeep parts suppliers so I guess its the correct size. Both my jeeps got tattooed with it so at least there's some consistency in my fleet.

Sorry, I meant the measurement of the entire line.  Like maybe 6”?
The width of the entire graphic at its widest point.

Oops, got that wrong. The top line is 6.125” overall. Left of the 4 it’s 1.365” and the longer section to the right is 3.2”

Slowly putting stuff back together; that includes wiring. Besides buffing paint, wiring stuff is another thing that I detest doing. I view electricity as a form of sorcery and struggle with getting the electrons going in the right places.

Previously, this jeep just had enough electricity to power the engine and brake lights- nothing else was connected or working. Now I’m going to have to make all the things work. Long ago I bought an 8 circuit aftermarket wiring harness. This was sufficient when there was a carburetor on the engine, now there is a fuel injection system with a fuel pump to power, along with wipers, heater and, oh yes, actual headlights and taillights. Hoping it all will work.

The oil pressure gauge looks a little better now.

Things are progressing, not as quickly as I would like, but moving forward. Wiring is tedious work that I rarely get right the first time. I can make simple circuits function, but the routing is what gets me the most with trying to think ahead and keep stuff serviceable and out of the way of other stuff- and not cut the wires too short!

Here’s how we ended today- it sort of feels like I’m working on someone else’s jeep as it looks so different.

This photo is showing something that hasn’t happened in 22 years- the headlights working! They have never worked and were just installed for show while I only drove it during the daytime. Some more things work now too, like the heater, taillights, parking lights, instrument light, hi beam indicator and also installed a back up light. I also noted that my previous wiring work included way too many red wires, so that got fixed.

Otto - what did you use for a backup light?
I have been thinking about using a bullet type marker
light like a '46 CJ2A would have in the grill. Would have a real period correct look to it.

Nothing fancy, just a black rubber tractor light.

Happy to have more parts back on the jeep! Our Thanksgiving plans changed and the help I was counting on to assist with the windshield frame and hood didn’t materialize, so I had to put them on myself. Still glad to get all the loose, freshly painted pieces in one place and out of harm’s way. It’s getting there.

Things are going back together fairly well while trying not to scratch the paint doing so. I found one minor screw up so far in that the transfer case levers weren’t in place when the console was fitted. When the levers were installed, I couldn't pull them all the way back. So I had a choice to make: move the console or bend the levers- I chose to bend the levers.

I don’t remember the interior being so small.

Finally getting to the grille welting. Instead of the crazy rivets, I’m using these weld studs found at the local hardware store. The wiring for the headlights will be attached to the studs and out of harm's way.

Got some other stuff assembled also.
