    Posted: 09 Mar. 2012 at 3:23pm
Guys,
I know the subject has been talked about here, but I would really like some help so i can make an informed decision. I am currently running valvoline 10w/30 oil in my L-134. It has about a 500 miles on a rebuild. I know that the modern oils do not contain adequate additive protection for these old motors. My question is, Does anyone have a good solid opinion on which oil/brand/weight I should go to to avoid any premature wear, and maintain the life of my engine components?
BTW, i live in the deep south. Rarely get temps below 32, and most summers are mid 90's, and i typically put about 200 miles a month on my Jeep.

Thanks,
David

Dozens of prior discussion about motor oils.  Search for "zddp".

I like the non synthetic oils made for big trucks myself. With 200 miles a month chances are any oil that has adequate zddp in it will be fine. You are going to change oil far before it gets worn out, just to get rid of condensation and because of the time it has been in the engine, not the mileage...

Bill,
What weight oil and brand do you run? I have access to plenty of truck oil, as I own a trucking company. Just wasn't sure if the new diesel engine oil has been stripped of its additives as well with all the new EPA stuff.

Rotella 15 40 or 20 50 depending on how old the motor is. My escort truck runs synthetic and gets changed every 8-10K, but that is a different deal than a jeep.

motor is original to a '51 willys. It had only 36,000 when i rebuilt it, but had been sitting up for many years. I ran it through a break in period, then went to 10/40 oil. Just readjusted tappets, and they felt fine, but I really want to treat this engine right so it will last, hence my oil questions...
Thanks!!

I run Mobil delvac 15-40, many others use Rotella here in MN. I like the hi detergent and the heavy oil, I rarely run in the winter and most of the use is 70 degrees or more. Nothing against synthetics and are in most cases better than regular oil but as others have said it is not a mileage issue and in my opinion not worth the extra dollars. I may only run my 2A 1000 miles a year and if the oil gets a little dark I change it. MHO, Lee

Rotella 30w. With ZDDP additive added in to the crankcase each oil change.
