I went ahead and put my winter wheels on so that I can roll him around:
I'm not as far along as I wish I was but at least now I can't pick Bam Bam up and carry him anymore. |

Jpet, Is this the frame you were working on when I picked up the MB tub or the one in the garage? I forget which is which. It looks really nice. By the way I picked up a bad case of the Willys/Green disease from you while I was down there. More info to follow on my condition.

Bam Bam's Brake Test
Let's see. Since last post I have rebuilt or replaced everything on the rolling chassis. This weekend I overhauled the transmission and transfer case. This week I will put the drive shafts in. After that, I'm ready to drop a motor and radiator in and then I can take the customary "rolling chassis" cruise. . Thanks for reading. |

Well, I don't think I know what I'm doing anymore. As I clean, rebuild, and paint parts, I get more conflicted about removing the original paint .... and even rust. I know. Stupid . Anywho, I was going to use my '42 MB motor but since I have been running it in Gen'l Willys, it has started consuming its fair share of oil so at the least it will need a rebuild. For this reason, I have decided to use my GPW motor for now. This motor runs but I have not driven it. I've just idled it in my other MB but since I want to get this vehicle going ASAP, I'm going to use it at least for now. Here is a pic of the motor with original grey paint and some OD paint where it had been repainted at some time. As I was cleaning this engine, I just can't bring myself to repaint it just yet so I've decided to leave it as is just for now. One unique thing about this engine is it has a rebuild tag: This stamp is behind the water pump: The motor has a civilian head and I have a GPW head to replace it with: I don't have a calipers at the moment but judging by this pic, it has been severely milled in the past. |

HI Jpet
So that rebuild tag is from June 22, 1948....wow....is it me or is that engine wasn't that old when it got rebuilt was it???...you gotta wonder what broke inside for them to wanna rebuild at such an early age....huh??... I do like the tag.... MikeC

The engine is a mid 1944:
http://wwiijeepparts.com/Archives/JeepSerialNumber.html#SerialNumberLocation ... not necessarily that old for a rebuild IMO. The engine in GW is on its second rebuild in 84XXX miles. |

Well, I decided that Bruce needs this GPW motor more than me so now I'm just trying to decide my next move.

I know this is an old thread, but it's killing me. What was your next move?
I've thoroughly enjoyed this build. It gives me inspiration for my own. Have you continued to make any of these parts for others? Good stuff. Steve

Hi Steve,
I still have this project and plan to complete it. Maybe someday when I retire. I'm not sure yet. I did decide to go another direction using parts of jeeps long gone to remain guiltless of "hacking up" a good MB such as this one. Many of the build techniques I used in this thread, I also used in "Building a Universal Modified. Thanks for reading.
