I've always thought a Toyota 22r and a 5 speed would be great to have in a jeep. They run forever as long and you change the timing chain every 100,000 or so. I'm on my third Toyota right now. This one has 202,000, my others went 250k before the frames rusted in half.

Water cooled - hooks up perfectly to the stock CJ2A radiator.

OK...
Should be able to get some update photos next week (both axles, wheels and steering reinstalled).  And then it's on to the body - this summer's project!
But here are a couple of pictures of what we started with - an early 194? CJ2a and a late 1948 or 1949 CJ2a (Cj3a style frame, which we used for the new build).

My other Jeep - 1948 CJ2a (with repro body) - restoration done in the 1980's

Sandblasted frame

New motor mounts welded in for the Kubota motor

Wheels sandblasted and painted

Fitting the motor

Installed motor - left side view

...right side view

Finished the front end with disc brakes - with that, complete rolling chassis

...starting on the sheetmetal fitting.  Original grill, hood and tailgate...

next - cowl and side panels.

not sure - they came with the motor "kit" but i think they are industrial (stationary) motor mounts.  Try contacting Greg Margison at Overland Diesel (overlanddiesel@gmail.com) - they guys that made the motor kit for me.  Good luck!

Still a bunch of small things to finish up, but took the jeep for its maiden voyage...
The little Kubota motor pulls like you wouldn't believe!

Not to got too far back on your build but. How did you have to modify the Bellhousing to fit your engine?
Tact is for those without the intelligence for sarcasm.

Basically three things modified to make the motor mate to the T90 transmission (all the parts made by Overland Diesel (www.overlanddiesel.com)):

1) machined a spacer (about an inch or so thick) between the motor and the bellhousing
2) Kubota stock flywheel machined and bored to accept a stock CJ2A clutch and pilot bushing
3) need to use a M38a1 bellhousing

With that, it bolts right up with no problems whatsoever.

Hi Andreas:

congratulations. Its up and running and what a nice looking conversion you got. Looking into your engine bay
i'd say the Kubota fits sweeter than the original. Cant wait to see a YT vid with you rig and listen to you diesel working it.
I contacted Greg twice a couple weeks ago but unfortunately he didn't reply yet. Maybe everybody interested in obtaining a conversion set should send a petition ;-)

Happy Jeeping

Max

Thanks, Max!

Still quite a bit to finish first - windshield, wiring, lights, gauges...
