ADRIAN I don't think a 25% overdrive and 7.00 X 16 TYRES will be too much for the 5.38 gearing. Try the 'rubber overdrive' first and go from there. Who knows, you might reach 50 MPH - 80.4672 KPH to you!

Based on responses here I think I'll go with 7.00s or minimum 6.50.

Mike

I will try and get a set of  700-16s sometime in the near future, I also need eleven  7.50-20s for the GMC so I will have to talk nicely to the house manager firstBig smile.

I will hopefully get the Jeep on the road later this year and once its mobile I will load a few photos onto the page.

We have a 100 kmh limit on the roads here, it would be nice to do 80 kmh, the 70 kmh that it will do with the 600s will make a few people grumpy if they get stuck behind you.

Thanks for all the info to you and the guys,  I want  to stay away from an Overdrive if I can as I would like to leave the PTO free to drive a few things,  but I still have to find a nice PTO to fit to it anyway...

I like the 6:50 x16's best, they look really good and fill the wheel wells better then the 6:00x16's.  7:00's work as well, but you do feel a loss of power a bit, and they look best with 1" of lift.

I also have the 700 16s, with a 1" rancho spring and it looks about right. I think they tend to look a little tall for a stock height or old saggy springed Jeep though.

Maybe I should start another thread, but as a related question, aside from the NDTs, and the STA super traxions, what other options are there for a set of tires? I'm about to get a new set and those seem to be the only things I can find. I think even a small set of super swampers would look good, but they don't make a size I think will fit on the stock rim.
I've been asking around tire stores and nobody seems to be able to get anything. I have had several offer to mount some modern radials on my rims, but they all have highway tread patterns.

Look at the cooper st tire in 215/85 r16.  They look great on the jeep and have an aggressive tread.  I will post photos of my m38 with them at some point.

I have 700 mud & snows on what I think are stock 16" Willy's steels wheels for my 49 Cj2a and there is not much clearance, I do get some rub running on steep slopes.n One thing has confused me since I started this project two years ago though is why the guy has 5 flat washers on each front stud for spacers?
Makes me think later steel wheels with to wide a tire he was trying to push out for clearance space?

Mike, the 31x9.5 super swampers I have on my willys with the 15x6 wheels (3.75" backspacing) I ran them with stock springs for a while before I put the taller springs on that you saw this weekend.  I think it looked pretty good at that height :)

I have 15" TSLs on wagon wheels on the Willys now -- looking to move to 16" and a 'stock' look. You have a nice Jeep (actually, TWO), Daniel.

Got your bell housing yet?

Was more for the overall diameter, 31" :-)

No, not sure what day it'll arrive.  Don't think we got mail today.  Even though I had to work.  LOL

I will go with 30" or 31" - i am replacing all the springs and putting them UNDER the axle where they belong... then I'll eyeball it and decide.
