I won a tightsteer at the Willys Picnic. I put it in my '53 and lets just say, I'll be buying another one for my '49. It turned a great driving jeep into a superb driving jeep!

X2,IMHO the best money you can spend on a Jeep, 2nd. would be an overdrive

How well does the Tightsteer compare to, say a properly rebuilt and adjusted Ross box with a new worm shaft?

The Tightsteer is not intended to take up slop in a worn box its function is to provide constant contact in a "In good condition or rebuilt box". I have rebuilt boxes with NOS parts and have still found tight spots in the hard left or hard right positions, with repop parts it is a bigger problem. IMHO unless you had a perfect fitting box, you will notice a huge difference in drivability.
