With thanks to Bob W, here is a link to his site with photos showing the results of his research into 2A/3A Fuel Tank Manufacturers, Mitchell Metal Products and O. L. Anderson.   Additional photos and information is here:  Original '46 fuel tank mfg .stamping

i have, yet another version of the "tank auto", this time with smaller font, and the symbol on the same side as the name mark...along with the "HMMP" (?) version of tank. we are trying to decipher which we are going to refurb for the '45. Also, it is hard to see, but the bafle inside the tank auto looks as if they used the outer panel for the baffle, as it has the same namesake stamping on the side of it. both side panels on the tank auto are indented in, not outwards, and it's neck is welded, not soldered, like the other tank ..the sending units are different, the raised housing one has a cork float, the flat housing one has a soldered float.  low

Tony:

OK, I assumed they were '48 since your photos were all called "48-" sumpthin.

Can you get a closer shot of the logo on the back of the green one?  And is that end indented, as opposed to outdented like most others?

Here's the 2 from my '46 & '47.  Turns out the '46 is not original (I had already suspected that, not being body color):

The 2 tanks are identical except for the rear bracket mount.  The '46 (black) rear bracket is 2" further inward, so doesn't line up w/the tub bolt hole.  That's why I can't find my rear bracket: never had one!  Anyone know what this tank was made for?

The side forming is the same as Garys unmarked one, w/more rounded edges:

Both filler necks flanged & spot welded:

Seam crimps smooth, not serrated:

Sam,
I guess original may be a misnomer(sp)?  The original tank I'm referring to is the one in my first post, the one marked with the big "A" on it.  Just trying to pin down what is original.

Tony,
try sending me some more pics and I'll see if I can post them for you. (last time I couldn't but maybe the Cat can.)

Are you guys determining that a tank is original based on it's having an original body paint color underneath?  How else other than word of mouth would you know?

I don't think my home computer can post a photo.  I'll have to redo this tomorrow.

I'll get side-by-side photos of my two tomorrow.  See if it sheds any more light.

OK, I'll do what I can with what I got...The other manufacture of the tank I heard about maybe the one you posted. I do have a couple tanks of different construction, but similar in their seems. then again they are different in the fuel neck and rear hold-down (ground)...
The one on the left is the one I posted original. The other has no markings on the face. Neither does the one on my neighbors '48, only the seaming is different, but the neck construction is the same.?

The serrated seam is on my neighbors '48 and has no markings on the front face.

Gary:

Let's do pin it down.  What was the 3rd. supplier tank?  Was it marked or unmarked?

I've heard of another tank supplier as well. This should be fun to pin down.

Could this be like the "Kelsey Hayes" rims V/S "Motor Wheels" Supply issue?.....
