I have been working on the 48 and am thinking of making it into a small wrecker. I noticed in the equipment book that shows all the optional equipment that Little Giant made one for the 2a. There is also a cool video of a gas station attendant talking about his. I was hoping someone here might know of one that is available or guide my search. I was thinking I could easily fabricate one but having an old original would be more desirable.
Thanks

I've always thought the Willys pickup wrecker looked cool. The thing that got me was how a 3100 pound truck with a flathead 60 hp 4 cylinder, that barely moves itself, would haul another vehicle? Imagine pulling a mountain pass in low 4 wheel drive. Imagine the brakes stopping it! Wow. Suicide. John

Hi Frank,
I believe what you want is a Canfield Wrecker setup. My buddy in Conn. has one a '46 CJ2A and it is wicked cool. Check this out http://www.ewillys.com/2012/08/17/1955-canfield-wrecker-brochure-on-ebay/comment-page-1/ |

years ago not to far from me, a fellow was selling a cj2a with a wrecker.
it fit the jeep well, it resembles the wrecker that stacy david from trucks put onto that coe truck, but a much smaller size. neatest jeep ever, however I am not to sure how well it would drive or stop :P

Daron Wanberg has a CJ2A wrecker, Canfield #13 as I recall.
It is a fold-down boom.
The permanent upright version was much heavier. I sold mine to a guy in Reading Pa 17 years ago

I would think they were used more on the lot or in local areas, only. In town towing, etc. Keep in mind, people didn't 35 mph from light to light back then either.

I've operated a 6 cylinder early 50's 3/4 ton Chevy as a wrecker, and it was lots of white knuckled fun in the mountains. I would second the thought that a CJ with a wrecker was more useful in town and at low speeds, not over the road or in hill country. I wouldn't even want to guess how badly a real load would hurt wheel bearings. It sure would be nice to get into tight places with. And great for shuffling the jeeps in the yard. It would beat moving jeeps with the Cub Cadet. Now I gotta start looking for one. |

That poor jeep towing the Dodge... wow! I believe that is a hand cranked winch, which is pretty common for the era. Notice there is no tow bar included, as in more modern tow trucks.. These were designed for dragging stuff that still had substantial bumpers. |

Thanks for all the input! Phil- thanks for the photo . Swiss army knife is right! I would love to get a cycle mower too. I could really use that. Actually I probably won't tow much with it except another small jeep. And probably only around my yard or so. I just think it would look cool with the wrecker and a plow on. I would drive it in the local BLADE PARADE around Christmas in down town RED LODGE. And general bombing around town. I like the idea of a hand crank winch. A friend of mine had a 2a with a hand crank winch on his front bumper and it worked great.
Joe Friday-Do you think Daron would part with his. Is He a member here on the 2a page? If anyone has any leads I would be interested in contacting them. I will have to post some photos of the 48 as it gets closer to looking like a jeep which should be soon. Thanks

Not a lot of weight left on the front tires in that brochure picture. Scary steering. Is that a counter weight on the front end of the one towing the old car?

I'm betting it is. I have a '53 Dodge Power Wagon, I wouldn't want to try and lift it, let alone tow it, with a 2a! |

It seems to me you would have to beef up the rear springs too. I wouldn't want to have to go down a hill and stop all that weight with stock brakes either.

How would you like to hook onto an old Packard with a straight 8 with a cj2a?
