I've looked at rack and pinions but they are pretty pricey. The problem with an s10 is the steering is in front of the suspension. Behind would have been a way better thing! I may still end up doing that though. I like the rack and pinion so much better. Could even get away with manual rack too i imagine.

Finished up the passenger side fender last week. This fender had lots of little rust pits and a dent along the top about 6" behind the curve. Now onto the windshield, which needs a bunch of work.
I may have solved the steering box issue too. I was at my buddy's shop yesterday and looked at the rack and pinion on a 1998-2000 ford ranger. They are a front steer unit like the s10 and have a very high angle to them where the steering column connects to it. My buddy has a junk one I'm going to lay my hands on for some experimenting to see how it fits and if the tie rod ends are different. I'm sure someone makes the right tie rod ends. I also found a nice sway bar setup from an early 2000s jimmy that will mount right up. |

I have the windshield and the front splash pan finished as well, now onto the hood and grille.
One question I have for those who have been there. Since this sits on an s10 frame, looks like maybe an '89, the power steering box is really in the way of the radiator. I was thinking of switching it over to a power rack and pinion. The problem lies with this being such an expensive proposition. The s10 frame is very narrow and the pivots on the suspension arms are only about 18" apart, making the options for a rack pretty limited. I looked at a ranger setup which has some things right, but it's at least 4" too wide, which I think would result in "bump steer." I have some others to look at in junkyards too. Someone does sell a kit for this, but they start at $600! I might get away with keeping what I have and making the hoses different, but I'd still love to have the room the rack and pinion provide. Anyone have any thoughts? |

Here is another update on the Jeepster project. I got the steering/radiator/power steering lines and such all figured out over the weekend. I had to make sure the radiator cleared the power steering lines and the hood and such.

Jpet, yes it was. Just have to get a proper cooling fan, and make nice ends for these frame rails and incorporate something to hold the center of that grille and the trans cooler under the shroud.

I did not like the way the frame just terminated (even though the valance covered it) so I made two of these caps last night to weld on to give the frame a better look, plus it will now give me a place to weld a crossmember to that I need to support the center of the grille.

Here's a little job I did last night. I put those frame extenders on, then made this crossmember to hold the front of the grille up like the original jeepster had. Got a touch more to do on it tonight but it's mostly done.

Been a while since I've updated. I've been working on small parts to get them out of my way while collecting sheet metal to make repairs. I also tweaked the body to line everything up, have been working on door latches and cataloging and putting things away.
Last night I finished bracing up the body to prepare to cut out sheet metal. This will probably be a two year effort at my pace and time availability! Needs large chunks of the floor and rockers all the way down. The last one is of the rear splash pan I bought off Harry Sheets at the Spring reunion last year...it was folded under from being in an accident at some point Here are a couple recent photos. |

Kaiser Willys has a lot of the floor and rocker panel pieces in their catalogue. I ordered one long and one short floor panel and was pleased with it. Jeepster man also has stuff at a pretty good price, I thought.

what do you guys think about the bracing I have. Do you think I need more in there to replace the floors and rockers?

Possibly add one from cowl to cowl and either door jamb to door jamb or wheelwell to wheelwell down low to keep the floor area from spreading but counter point would be working around it doing the floor.
May not be necessary but that's what I would do.....opinions may vary. |

I worry about things droppIng when I remove the rockers. I also want to be able to work on it without having to be a contortionist.
I think one around the wheel wells is a good idea as it the cowl. |

Here are a few I took yesterday of my progress in cutting out sheet metal. I still have some inner rocker work to do. Then I can start making panels!
Roc, is that bracing more in line with what you were thinking? I only doing one side at a time to keep the body's integrity. |
