Well that was quick the engraving shop sent me a photo of a test knob and its FUBAR the lettering is way to blurry for what I want. SO as they say back to the drawing board. I have the shop up in Portland looking at the photos to see if they can figure it out.

Coming off a week of little sleep while working 10.5 hour nights. I got little done this weekend save finishing up the Wife's crafts room (been a long project) But I think I may have solved one of my long term problems. How to join the Fresh air duct to the Air filter can and the fresh air intake. I found a place on eBay selling huge 4" wide rubber bands too long to fit tight around the joint. So I went down and bought some tire repair rubber glue like comes in a patch kit. And I cut the big rubber band down to 2" wide and shortened it about 2" then made a 1.25" overlapping joint and dang if it didn't work.

I'll get a couple photos once everything is assembled. I ordered 20 more of the big rubber bands to make up spares.

YAHOO we have a winner. Portland Laser Engraving sent me a photo of the test knob they cut for me. And while I would like the letters a little bit farther apart (I let them know this today) I am very happy with the way the engraving looks.

The little notches around the outside edge of the knob are because the knob come with a virtually sharp edge on them which I have been rounding off with a file and then polishing up so they even more closely match the Original Willys knobs. So that won't be something showing up on the actual knobs.

If he does them tomorrow or Thursday the wife can pick them up for me Friday on her way home from work,

Waiting on the dang lacquer stick to show up Thursday. I could have nice engraved Switch knobs by this coming Monday.

so more night paving. Today is a transition day nights to day. So once I got up I have the day to myself. So I made use of NAPA's bucket sale and I bought my series 31 950CCA battery for 20% off. It fits the tray very nicely. So now to find or design the clamps ill need to connect all my cables.

Nope but some of our trucks may have been on the job. Years ago we did Elendale from Highway 22 all the way into Dallas and we've done a lot of work around Dallas

Bummer was hoping to have the Knobs back from the engraver this week. Looks like soonest I can have the wife pick them up is this coming Wed,

And I got a notice from Summit Racing the electric fan controller I ordered is now not expected to arrive at Summit from Flex a Lite until 9/14/20 so thats a bummer to. I wanted to have all the electrical stuff done soon.

I got the small order of carb jets I ordered the other day I can now setup my Weber as recommended by a couple guys that have gone before me on this. I should be within a jet size step even if my Header and other engine mods change the settings compared to the way their engines are set up.

Out of curiosity I looked up the definition of a Street Rod. And on at least a dozen different sites including the NSRA web site. I find that CHUG A LUG is a bonified Street Rod (its also a Street Rod under the State of Oregon's DMV classifications) So there's that.

A 'Street rod' with off-road capability.....the way I've kinda looked at Frankie for the last 12 years.

You could go with Dirt Rod too, I guess.

(mine has been turning up on alot of Tumblr blogs lately, always surprises me when I run across it)

Well a little more done this weekend.

I got my fancy Battery Clamp all finished. Hard to see but on the top of the clamp are 4) set screws that push down on strips of Micarta laying on top of the battery to act as a clamp. In reality I cut the Aluminum sides so close I had to tap the Micarta strips into place with my little hammer. The battery sits on some strips of inner tube rubber. Its all very very secure which is a good thing the Battery a Series 31 950CCA weighs in at 61 lbs. I may also have found a solution for Jeep Lean. With the Battery in place the front frame horn on the right side is down 1/2" LOL

Next up is the Positive Battery cables I am running 1/0 cables (actually a high grade fine strand welding cable) on 12V so that should be well into over kill.  I covered the cables with a NEON RED Tech Flex to set them off and add another layer of protection.  I went with a Stud Terminal Battery and I am using a 1/8" thick x 1" wide Copper Bus Bar to connect the Power lead that goes to the 50amp Anderson plug at the Rear of the Jeep its 6ga. And then more 1/0 to the Anderson plug that will be mounted on the outside of the inner fender to Plug a Winch or Jumper Cables into maybe even for my Battery charger and maintainer (way over kill for that).

And a little better look from the right side

I used 3/8" Brass bolts and Nuts to secure the cables to the Bus bar. Will make it really easy to service and clean connections and NO LEAD to deal with. I do have to be careful the battery says only 10-15ftlbs on the studs. So no uga dugas when tightening.

I have to wait for the Right Fender to be mounted up in order to do the Ground side cables. A single cable will go from the Battery to a Post on my Master Disconnect Switch that is mounted in a Micarta Cup attached to the Inner fender. There will also be a single 12ga ground wire attached to the Ground side terminal that leads to the Console so that even with my Master Disconnect Switch off I can keep the clock running in the stereo. I have a relay that controls the rest of the power to the console that cuts it off when the key is off.

The rest of the Ground cables will all attach to the other pole on the Master Disconnect Switch.

Almost done with electricity

Awesome work as always Clap

Are you going to carry battery cable adapters to standard post?
In case you ever have a battery failure in the middle of nowhere, And can’t come up with a stud post battery.

Like say your east of the Steens Mountains exploring the Jordan craters and your battery cracks and only battery you can borrow from a rancher has regular posts..... Very unlikely for a total failure I know but just saying.

Had not thought of that. At the same time most commercial trucks use a stud type mount. So there would be a source of battery. I will also when out adventuring be carrying two Large RV batteries in my Trailers electrical system that could be used as a starter battery in the short term. I could easily make up an adapter that would go from the other two styles of posts to my Buss Bar setup. I'll consider that.

That's the same thoughts I've had with my 3B ever since the first of now 4 different sbc's went into it (a 327 in 1973).  It made for a very spirited ride with 5.38 gears as long as you had no need to turn or stop-----

Mark, I admire your workmanship!

WHAT A LONG STRANGE TRIPS ITS BEEN!

OK finally the Switch Knobs are done. The engraver did one of them on the wrong knob so I had to modify the mount to fit the Wiper switch shaft (6mm with a set screw instead of 8-32) this knob is also cut shallower then the others so hard to get a good paint layer in the letters. I might have this one redone down the road. The other one he did it on one of the extras I gave him to practice on. And again I had to change the mount this time to 15/32" with a set screw. A little unnerving reaming out a finished knob.

BUT he charged me $75 to do the work and while I always hope someone will do a perfect job I have come to expect a little less.

So here's what they look like:

Sorry for the crappy photos lots of reflections on the buffed dash paint. But you all get the idea of how they look.

OK back to Battery cables and such. I am having to drop down to #1 gauge in order to make a couple of the turns to get through the inner fender and to the Anderson Plug I have mounted outside the fender.

For crying out loud. I went through some switches and controls to see how the various circuits were working now that I can test them with the Chugs actual battery instead of just my little jump start battery. And while everything work I have something working I can't decide if I want to work. My turn signal indicators come on with the brake lights! Reason being they are wired into the rear turn signal wires which are also the brake line wires!!!

Guess I can get used to that. If I hook them to the front Turn they will be on when the park or head lights are on. So thats even more annoying.

LOL

Most everything else appears to be working as it should.
