WOWOWOW

I knew I had a valve out of adjustment but I had no idea how bad. #3 Intake was almost a full turn and a 1/4 of the adjuster out the Exhaust about 3/4 a turn out. At .007" per turn That was HUGE. I can't wait to see what CHUG does on all 4 cylinder LOL I got 61.7mph with no trouble on 3 should be much better on 4 LOL.

Must have made a big mistake when setting them up during assembly. Well I never said I was perfect.

I never trust myself to get valves set right on just one try.
Even if the second check seems right, I do a third check.

Next problem the leaky Manifold studs.

So I went to NAPA and the best option looked to be a Permetex  High Temp Red rated for 650° intermittent. So I came home cleaned the Block threads, chased them, then took my little bitty butane torch and dried them out. Then chased the threads on the Studs and completely coated the threads with the stuff and screwed them in. Once the stuff has set up I will use a razor blade to cut the excess off around the stud to leave a nice seal.

Then on to the next step. Re installing the Header and Intake Manifold. Which will come tomorrow morning. Got to get some work done on the front porch today. Before the wife get home form work.

If its not to hot this afternoon I'll look at whats next on the to do list.

OK a list of first drive problems addressed (I won't say fixed until I get it out on the road again)

Head retorqued

Complete rerouting of Brake lines to reduce the number of connections and adapters
Removal of the Line Lock Solenoid
Moving the Residual Pressure valves to within 6" of the Banjo fittings on the Master Cyl.
Brakes rebled and road ready

Adjusted valves
put sealer on cover side of cover grease on the block side to help stop any leaks

Manifold Studs sealed to prevent coolant leaking
New Manifold gaskets

Drivers mirror mount rotated to allow Mirror to angle up move
Tightened Speedo Cable

Freed up throttle cable (had part of the vinyl cover out of place causing the throttle to hang up)

Fixed where the Oil trough had been rubbing on the Planetary housing.

Still to come:

Reinstall OD unit this time with .050" of shim as per talking to Herms man Adam who has been dealing with the 30% units popping out of Direct.

Refill Transmission/Transfer Case.

Refill Coolant

Reattach the rear drive shaft, Skid Plate, and E Brake balance bar unit

After CHUG is back on the ground

Double check Front axle spindle nuts

I have 3 more weekends/Sundays to get ready for the local car show. Seams all the shows I can find are on Saturday which is a total crap shoot for me depending on work. I asked for the 7th of August off a month ago to be sure I could get it.

OK an early report on Saturday work (YEA we worked extra hard yesterday and got todays paving done early so no work today)

Transfer Case pan on and sealed up with Permatex gear Oil sealant. Bolts torqued to 18lbs.

OD reinstalled waiting for the Gear Oil Sealant to skim over to Torque the Bolts to 30Lbs. I was happy that since I had to have the neighbor come over to hold the crankshaft nut still while I torqued the nut in the OD to 115lbs that it actually lined up for the locking washer as he left before I thought about that little detail. Snap ring in place and rotates in the groove as it should.

Rear drive shaft bolted back up I will torque the bolts down tight when I do the OD bolts. I forgot to drag 9/16" wrenches with me when I put it in place.

I have the cooling petcock retightened and ready to reinstall the coolant.

Once I take a short break I'll get the OD and Driveshaft bolts tight then work on reistalling the Skid plate and my E Brake balance bar unit.

Then I'll refill the Tranny and Transfer Case with Sta Lube GL-4 get the gear box temp sensor reinstalled and I should be done underneath.

I'm thinking that I will rig up a stove wire hanger so I can hold the Fuel Pressure Regulator and Fram cansiter filter up in place and take a test drive before I put the Left fender back on. I'll have to figure out a way to make sure the hood can pop up. this way if I still have Manifold Stud leaks I'll still have easy access.

On a side NOTE the Company I work for just announced a BIG company BBq and Picnic at one of our old Gravel pits that borders the Santiam River and has a very cool very shady place to do such a thing.

Its on AUG 14th a SATURDAY!!! So its the perfect time to show off CHUG to the Boss and the guys I work with. I been leery of driving it to work as we park on a Huge gravel lot right behind the dump trucks and that causes a lot of rock dust in the air as the trucks leave and return. And even with a Painters canvas tarp over it it will get covered. And only some of the guys would see it there anyway as we all leave and return at different times and the other guys (non drivers) work mostly out of another location.

F-ing gear oil in. Man I hate that job. If I have a reason to tear the top of the Transmission off I am going to figure out a filling port and dip stick that comes through the floor. This is just to big of a PITA.

Mark, you can get a pump for gallon jugs of oil that work fast and easy below the trans and transfercase. I think mine came from HF but I'm sure many auto parts suppliers have them.
I see some folks don't care for them, but after a little practice mine works great for me and I can top off my trans in 5 min with little mess.

Well tomorrows the second big day return to the road after initial repairs. I'm going to get CHUG down off the cribs and get the left fender put back on and coolant in it and try to get a test drive in. Hopefully to find the things I needed to fix have been.

If that goes well I am going to go ahead with putting the console in and try to get the speakers mounted.

I also want to tighten up the front wheel bearings I have a tiny amount of play in the front wheels.

WOW off the cribs and refilled the coolant. Not sure a person should be this sweaty at 7:30am.

Going to work on getting the Left front fender back on.

I took the Masking tape I had protecting the door opening off and ended up with 3-4 small chips in the paint to be touched up.

I been looking for a rubber molding to fit over the edge to protect it as both the wife and I tend to drag their foot/shoe over the edge getting in and out. I'm thinking about trying that Flex seal tape but if I do I'm going to get some of that super low tack masking tape to put under it.

Should have Chug out for a run around the hood this afternoon. Soon as I get it backed out of the shop this morning I'm going to revisit the timing and carb adjustments. I can't adjust the carb with the Air Box on top of the carb part of it hides the Idle mixture screw. So I need to do that now.

WELL F**K it still pops out of Direct.

Has more power for sure. Way less leaking. Running a little warmer (might not have the coolant full)

Brakes work much better.

Don't think I am going to be messing with the OD until after the up coming car shows. It has no problem running in OD. Or if I hold it in Direct to get going then shift into OD and stay there.

LOL Was showing off for the guys at NAPA and popped the clutch. It pulled the front tires about an inch off the ground. Their mouths dropped open.

LOTS OF SUN SHINE TODAY.

OK I put about 35 miles on CHUG today.

Brakes MUCH better no leaks to be seen
Manifold studs no leaks to be seen
Mirrors properly adjusted.
Engine Idles at 20inHG

Rear main seal is leaking. But then I kind of knew that was always going to be a problem with the condition of the seal surface.

There is some Gear oil leaking at the rear of the transfer case. Nothing like it was before.

And as said Before the OD pops out of Direct.

SO I think I have found the solution to my door jam chips. I will first use a tiny pointed brush and fill in the chipped area so its a hair more then level with the surrounding paint. Then I'll use a tiny leather faced sanding block and some 2000 grit paper to level and smooth.

Then I am going to mask off a strip about 3/4" wide on the outside of the Door opening and run masking tape behind the inner lip of the opening. Then spray it with two coats of Duplicolor CLEAR bedliner. Same stuff I used on the Floor but clear. It will provide protection while not being as noticeable as anything Black .

Upon checking my cardboard research test unit after Yesterdays 37 miles I am seeing about 4 drips of oil in 24 hours. SO I'm going to be good with the rear main seal.

I am seeing no coolant leaks around the Manifold Studs so cross fingers that problem is looking solved.

I am also not seeing any brake line leaks and the Proportioning valve seams to be working as it should.

I did when I had mom out for her ride do a real quick check to see if the E-Locker was working and it is. It left a nice two tire burn out in some soft ground.

I have not run the 4wd yet that will be next chance I get to find some soft ground.

I ended up feeling punky yesterday (I think I was running low blood sugar as I didn't eat much. So I ended up sleeping in today (I would have normally gotten up around 4-4:30 to get an early start before the heat.

But I have been working on a small project the Roll bar mounts for my Minimus 7 Speakers Should have them ready for Paint yet tonight if I don't get lazy.

Good grief I screwed up. And just figured out how. When I placed .048-.049" of shim in my 30% OD to help correct the popping out of Direct problem I am having I also used a gasket that is .10" thicker then the one Herm supplies. It wasn't until a little while ago that I realized this would cancel out .010" of the shims. So Guess I know to add at least another .010" if I use the same gasket when I next address this problem.

A couple of mile stones in CHUGS world. The first is CHUG is now fully insured for 20K assigned value and 10,000 miles a year.

The next is CHUG past the 100 mile mark on the Odometer.

So I think its time to get on with a few of the things I need to do before Aug the month of car shows!
