Ok so I got to work on mounting up the fans. Normally this would be a pretty simple thing to do but this Fan set does not mount through the core. And it took me 3 different trys to get something I liked. it turned out to be pretty simple. The biggest problem on doing it like this was the fear of drilling into a tube when drilling and threading the outer support. I also had to set the temp probe and do some wiring on the motor harness's I'm very happy about the 1" gap between my fancy Water pump pulley cover and shroud and fans I thought about adding a nice aluminum cover to the back of the Fans as they aren't very attractive but decided to for go adding any weight to the Fans. As you can see this Fan setup covers almost all of the core The Fan shroud has a collapsible rubber edge that my mounting system holds the fan tight against the core. This one shows how nicely the shroud clears the Water Pump Pulley Top view the green cable is the temp probe. Kind of a rear view Working on the Radiator Hoses next Aluminum tubes with Red Silicone connector hose. The lower hose is going to be interesting I found a 120° bend to use one of the Hose sections will end up being 6" long. So that will be the length of the repair hose I carry with me as it can be cut down to repair any of the pieces.

Radiator hoses figured out. The 250mm top aluminum tube was a PITA to find looked for almost a year before I found a place in England selling that length on eBay. Bottom one 120° bend was much easier and cheaper! The Hose is Silicone. Next up is the front axle breather its mounting to the left of the radiator just below the level of the hood. |

OK Front Axle breather. I used a $5.00 el cheapo fuel filter cutting one nipple off. Then I made a bracket that a boss on the filter would just squeeze into the bracket being held by a larger screw being used in one of the already made screw holes on the Radiator "Shroud" a couple wire clamps on the Radiator mount and then I left it free hang giving it plenty of movement for axle elevation changes. 1/4" Vacuum hose with some Tech Flex wrap and some heat shrink tubing to finish it off. Still have to work out the breather line for the Dana 44 30 spline in the rear. At one time I thought about running it to the base of the roll bar. But I think its going to end up the same as the front in construction and end up mounted in one of the Air tank compartments in the Rear Wheel Houses. Should help keep the gear oil water free if I go about splashing in any creeks. I ordered some high temp foam weather stripping foam to seal the radiator to the "shroud" that should be here Monday. Spendy crap but I wanted something rated for well over the possible temp the radiator could achieve even if boiling over. The stuff I got is rated for 150°C and 300°F so I think I am good there. Its self adhesive so I'll see how that works out. I'll clean everything with Prep-all so I remove any oils. Edited by Mark W. - 04 July 2020 at 8:31pm |

WHAT A PITA my electric fan controller has a manual override it needs to be connected to a seperate switch. I did that and nothing I can do will get the fan to operate. So silly me had to mount the fan controller on the side of one of the legs that hold up my fancy battery tray. So I had a late start this morning for work and I decided to pull it out so I could test it properly. WOW its like I went to college for automotive engineering it was in such a screwed place to get at. It will not be going back there. Not sure where it will be going but NOT THERE. Now when I get home I can try to figure out if the controller works or if I am screwed out of another $58 bucks cause having had it for almost 3 years now I am sure Summit racings return policy no longer applies. SUCH fun.

I understand, sometimes you just want to stomp things to pieces. I feel that way with my new phone, my brother, my neighbor, my neighbors... I know that I am not perfect, I have had many laughs at things I have done

Never been a fan of mud. More of a Pumice sand Great Basin Desert sort of guy. But the goal of this build is to have my Jeep such that I can drive it more then 1000 miles away from home towing along a lt weight off road capable camp trailer and go exploring. I'm not into the common 4x4 trails kind of thing. But being able to get to remote lakes and camping locations from Death Valley to the Arctic Circle is my goal.

OK so my eyes are going gaga after a couple of hours of studying electric fan controllers trying to find a better choice then the one I have which even on the bench nah can I make it perform! I ended up figuring I have a spendy Flex-a-lite fan unit lets try one of their controllers. Bummer on the deal its not going to ship until the 13th est. And of course to get the free shipping I ended up with another 5qt jug of Lucas Hot Rod and Classic 10w-30 oil (got my first 4 oil changes in the house already LOL. This unit is a little better designed as far as connections and such. Now to find the perfect spot for it NOT UNDER THE BATTERY |

Mark,
I didn't think you were going to replace the controller. Otherwise, I would have suggested this one. I have an earlier version without the Bluetooth. It has worked well for me and the wiring was pretty simple. Only drawback is not being waterproof. Micah

I looked at those but I'm kind of stuck with an under hood location and the comments on the site I viewed them on made a big deal about not being water proof.

I used a 60a relay out of a large body Ford, heavy duty temp switch and wired for on/off/auto. Never had any luck with electronic controllers and dury cycles.

OK so interesting development I have to work nights for next week. SO I can run around and get a couple things done at business's I normally can't get to. 1st Up getting my switch knobs engraved. I have 16) knobs to be engraved. The place I am going to have do it (based on them trying a sample knob) charges a min of $5.00 per item so each knob $5.00 cause at .15c a letter none of them will reach the min. And she said since they are all exactly the same knob she would charge me a $15.00 setup fee for the whole batch. SO $95.00 to engrave a bunch of .69c switch knobs! Seams like a lot of money but they will really finish off the Dash nicely. 2nd I have a couple items I need a little TIG welding done to. The Full MOON cover that will go on my spare tire I'm going to have a threaded slug welded to the center of the inside so I have a way to hold it to the Wheel that does not involve attachment to the wheel itself. And the other day I did something stupid and drilled a 3/8" hole in my Air Duct for the fresh air intake thinking I would connect the front Axle Breather there. Then I got to thinking about the Venturi effect and decided t not see if the air rushing through the duct could pull gear oil into the carb. 3d My car insurance guy I want to see what my options for insurance through SAFCO are as they have a classic car insurance that on line sounds doable. |

OK got the rear axle breather done. Only had to buy the 1/4" vacuum hose twice to get the length correct. Finally ended up with about 5.5' of hose. The little Breather filter is mounted up on the back side of my left side Spare tire brace. I used the same little filter as the one in front. I pulled the stock breather out of the Dana 44 and replaced it with a 90° brass jag. The hose then loops up zip tied to the Locker Electrical line and the Rear brake Flex hose. I then routed it up over the Bed cross member so its as far away from the exhaust as possible. This crappy photo shows the filter end of the line best I can get. You can see it but the nipple on the filter is both 1/4" and 5/16" I can just barely change the hose without pulling the Filter mount. I plan on covering the hole in the Spare Tire brace with some sort of rubber mud flap. And this morning I took the Knobs to the engraver. They will do a test knob today and if I OK the photo they will email me then Friday morning they will do the rest. The labels I put on this morning and aligned the top edge with the rotational Orientation of the various knobs. So hopefully when installed they will all have the lettering in a straight line. I also managed to drop stuff off to be TIG welded. I can pick that up tomorrow. Nice having a really good TIG welder just down the road. eat lunch mow the F-ng lawn and take a nap to get ready to work tonight all night. |
